Why don't I treat humans.....

Horses are quadrupeds with a prey animal instinct.
Humans are bipeds with a predatory instinct.

Whilst we are very similar in our MSK system, how we use them is quite different.

The BSc in Equine Science gave me a really good understanding of many aspects of the horse including, injury, repair and rehabilitation, fitness and performance, nutrition and other areas including both horse and human psychology. I found this invaluable when moving onto the MSc in Veterinary Physiotherapy.

So you see my 6 years of university study has focused on quadrupeds, and how they function.

Rehabilitation, comes in many levels...... Once we have a changed pattern of function we should be considering what we do to restore normal function, this is rehabilitation. There are no quick fixes in the restoration of a good balanced functional pattern. Any injury no matter how small you think it is can change the horse's ability to use its own body in the most effective and efficient way.

My aim is to treat the whole horse, from function to performance.

...............................FASCIA ..........................

Fascia is dense connective tissue that runs throughout the body.

It contains large amounts of elastin that can stretch up to 200x its original shape, this allows muscles and limbs to move.

It is a neural highway, giving the brain proprioceptive information. Superficial fascia can get stuck due to incorrect use, trauma, and or inflammation.

Fascia is tough but its not immune to injury.

Fast and slow twitch muscle fibres come in many sub divisions.

When we consider cross breeding our hot blood and cold blood horses to create our warmblood horses we must consider the impact of the integration of fast and slow twitch fibres in a basic form. However in reality this is much more complex.

The development of the best fittening plan that supports both fibre types and encourages the horse to to do the job we require.

Progressive Exercise Prescription

Specific exercises are designed and prescribed for your horse to help improve joint function, stability, increase proprioception and improve fitness and stamina. But more importantly the exercises get progressively more difficult so that the horse continues to improve.

There's a very good saying
"Do what you always did. Get what you always got"

From day 1, I encourage my clients to regularly stretch their horse in a routine plan. This helps improve muscle length and memory and suppleness. Stretching exercises also help us to prepare the horse for later on in the exercise program, when we introduce lengthening and shortening strides along with increased elevation of the flight arc.

Pole work is used to progressively improve the core strength, stability, joint function and movement. When we say progressive we mean the exercises start simple and get more difficult through the program.

I always start a program in walk, why? Because this is one of the most difficult gaits to regulate. Once we have a good functional pattern it is time to work in trot, this requires repetitive gymnastic pole work exercises. Lastly we work on canter. Helping balance and strength.

Once all our gaits are regulated then and only then should we look at increasing and decreasing stride length.

Other exercises such as balance pads, spinal mobility, all terrain proprioception and assault course exercises are then introduced. A good rehabilitation programme should contain a vast array of exercises to work on all aspects of the horse.
