ROUTINE BUILDS RECOVERY

Routine isn’t about living a boring life. It’s about building a life that feels safe enough that we don’t constantly need to escape from it.

In addiction, chaos can become normal. Late nights, broken promises, missed meals, poor sleep, impulsive decisions and constantly reacting to whatever happens next. Eventually, our mind becomes comfortable with disorder.

Recovery asks us to create something different.

Getting up when we said we would. Making the bed. Eating properly. Moving our body. Taking our vitamins. Going for a walk. Answering the phone. Attending the meeting. Doing the small things even when nobody is watching.

None of these actions seem life-changing on their own.

But repeated every day, they become something powerful: stability.

We won’t always feel motivated. Some mornings we’ll wake up tired, irritated or questioning everything. That’s when routine matters most.

Motivation gets us started. Routine keeps us moving when motivation disappears.

We don’t need to fix our whole life today. We just need to keep the promises we’ve made to ourselves for today.

JUST FOR TODAY

I will stop waiting until I feel like it.

I will follow my routine, take the next right action and remember that every small promise I keep to myself is another brick in the life I’m rebuilding.

Small actions. Repeated daily. Massive change.

ROUTINE OVER MOTIVATION

Recovery isn’t built on the days when we feel motivated. It’s built on the days when we don’t feel like doing it, but do it anyway.

Routine gives us something solid to hold onto when our thoughts and emotions are all over the place. Getting up at the same time, making the bed, eating properly, moving our body, checking in, attending meetings, writing things down and going to bed at a sensible time might seem simple — but these small actions create stability.

Addiction thrives in chaos, isolation and impulsive decisions. Recovery grows through structure, connection and consistency.

You don’t need to have a perfect day today. You just need to keep doing the next right thing.

Some days your routine will feel powerful. Other days it will feel like you’re simply going through the motions. Both count.

Because every time you keep a promise to yourself, especially when you don’t feel like it, you’re building trust in yourself again.

Just for today:
I won’t wait until I feel motivated. I’ll follow my routine and trust that consistent small actions are creating the life I want.

Taking my son Freddie to LA 🇺🇸✈️❤️

Not quite the journey we planned — our flight was delayed, but we managed to get on another one. A quick stop in San Francisco and we’ll only be a couple of hours behind schedule.

But sitting on this plane with my son, I’m reminded how different my life is today.

There was a time when addiction took away my presence, my time and so many opportunities to make memories.

Today I get to be here. Present, sober and grateful — taking my boy on an adventure together.

We’re not there yet… but we’re on our way. ❤️

LA, here we come. 🇺🇸🌴

CONSISTENCY

Recovery isn’t built on the days when we feel motivated.

It’s built on the days when we don’t.

Anyone can make positive choices when they’re feeling strong, focused and determined. The real change happens when we wake up tired, overwhelmed or frustrated — and still choose to do the things that keep us well.

Consistency doesn’t mean perfection.

It means showing up again.

Some days you’ll take huge steps forward. Other days, simply getting through the day without returning to old behaviours is progress.

Keep your routine.

Keep talking.

Keep being honest.

Keep doing the small things that you know work, even when your mind tells you they don’t matter.

Because one healthy decision might not change your life overnight.

But repeat that decision every day, and eventually you become someone who lives differently.

Don’t wait until you feel like doing the work.

Do the work consistently, and the feelings will eventually catch up.

Today, don’t worry about doing everything perfectly.

Just ask yourself:

What’s one thing I can do today that keeps me moving in the right direction?

STRENGTH FOR TODAY

August 27

Recovery isn’t about having the strength to control everything that happens around us. It’s about learning where to place our thoughts when life becomes difficult.

There will be days when our minds feel like a battlefield. Fear, resentment, anxiety, cravings and overthinking can all start fighting for our attention.

But I don’t have to follow every thought that enters my head.

Today I can bring myself back to what is actually in front of me.

I can focus on my recovery.
I can practise gratitude.
I can stay disciplined with my routine.
I can ask for help when I need it.
I can do the next right thing.

I don’t need to win tomorrow’s battles today.

My job is simply to get through today without returning to the person, behaviours or substances that once controlled my life.

Every difficult day I face without escaping from it makes me stronger.

Today I choose progress over escape, discipline over impulse, and recovery over destruction.

ADDICTION IS ONLY THE VISIBLE PART

What people can see is rarely where the real problem begins.

They see the drinking.
The co***ne.
The gambling.
The pills.
The destructive behaviour.

But they don’t always see what’s underneath it.

The loneliness.
The shame.
The fear.
The anxiety.
The trauma.
The feeling of never being good enough.
The emotional pain you’ve been trying to escape from for years.

By the time addiction becomes visible, something deeper has often been going on for a long time.

That’s why simply removing the drink or drug isn’t always enough.

If we only focus on stopping the behaviour, we can completely miss what was driving the behaviour in the first place.

Recovery is about going underneath the addiction.

Understanding yourself.
Understanding your triggers.
Learning why you think, feel and react the way you do.
Building a life you no longer need to escape from.

The addiction is what people see.
The healing happens in the parts they don’t.

Just to let everyone know, I’ll be closed from 28th August and back open on 8th September.

I’ll still be answering messages while I’m away and I’ll keep the daily posts going. There might be a bit of a delay with replies or posts because of the time difference, but I’ll get back to everyone as soon as I can.

For anyone I’m currently working with, keep doing what we’ve been working on, stick to your routine and reach out if you need to.

CA – Choose Day Tuesday will still be on as normal on Tuesday at 7pm.

Thank you to everyone for your support. I’m looking forward to having a bit of time away with my family, recharging and coming back ready to go again on the 8th September.

WE ONLY HAVE TODAY

26 August 2026

Recovery can become overwhelming when we start looking too far ahead.

“What if I feel like this forever?”
“What if I relapse?”
“How am I going to stay clean and sober for the rest of my life?”

The truth is, we don’t have to work all that out today.

We only have today.

Yesterday has already happened. We can’t change what we did, what we said, or the mistakes we made. We can take responsibility for them, learn from them and make things right where we can — but we can’t go back.

Tomorrow isn’t here yet. Worrying about it won’t control what happens.

But today, we have choices.

Today we can stay away from the first drink or drug.
Today we can be honest.
Today we can ask for help.
Today we can put a boundary in place.
Today we can do the next right thing, even when our head is telling us otherwise.

You don’t need to promise yourself forever.

Sometimes forever feels impossible.

Just make the decision that for today, you’re not going back to the life you’ve worked so hard to get away from.

Then tomorrow, when it comes, we do it again.

JUST FOR TODAY

I will stop trying to fix yesterday or control tomorrow.

My only job is to deal with today.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO FIX YOUR WHOLE LIFE TODAY

August 25

Recovery can become overwhelming when we look too far ahead.

We start thinking about next week, next month, relationships, money, work, family, mistakes we’ve made and everything we believe needs fixing.

Before we know it, we’re trying to solve our entire life before we’ve even got through today.

You don’t have to.

Sometimes recovery is simply asking:

What do I need to do TODAY to protect my recovery?

Maybe it’s staying away from the first drink or drug.

Maybe it’s making the phone call you’ve been avoiding.

Maybe it’s being honest about how you’re feeling instead of pretending you’re fine.

Maybe it’s eating properly, getting some sleep, going for a walk or sitting with an uncomfortable feeling without trying to escape it.

I’ve learned that feelings pass.

Cravings pass.

Bad days pass.

But if we react to a temporary feeling with an old behaviour, we can create consequences that last much longer.

So if today feels heavy, make your world smaller.

Not forever.

Not next month.

Just today.

Get through today clean and sober, and tomorrow we do the same again.

HALT & HEAL

One day. One decision. One step at a time.
