STRONGER FOR LIFE, NOT JUST FOR THE GYM💪🏼
Our Over 60s Strength & Fitness class runs every Tuesday & Thursday, 12–1pm at Achieve Functional Fitness, and it’s one of my favourite classes to coach.
The majority of our members are 70+, and we even have some brilliant people in their 80s coming along each week. You absolutely don’t need to have any previous gym experience. Whether you’re completely new to strength training or you’ve been exercising for years, everyone is welcome.
Strength training becomes SO important as we get older. It helps us maintain muscle and bone strength, improve balance and mobility, make everyday activities easier, and most importantly, maintain our independence.
🎥 Take the calf raises in this video as a great example.
They’re not just working the calf muscles, because they’re holding weights, they’re also training grip strength which is much more important than simply being able to open a stubborn jar! Research has consistently found an association between grip strength and important health outcomes including mobility, functional ability and longevity. Large studies and meta-analyses have found that lower grip strength is associated with a higher risk of mortality.
The calf muscles are equally important. Strong calves contribute to walking, pushing off the ground, climbing stairs, balance and general lower-body function. Lower-limb weakness is also associated with a greater risk of falls, which is why maintaining strength in the legs is such an important part of healthy ageing.
This is what we mean by functional strength, training your body to stay strong and capable for the things you actually want to keep doing in everyday life.
