Recovery is only part of the journey at SIAS. We’re here to walk alongside you as you build a life that feels full, positive, and your own.

Here is Mark’s Story;

I started out as a Service User here at SIAS. I had been addicted to drugs for 30 years, starting in my early teens, which ultimately led to a journey of self-destruction. I became a prolific offender to fund my drug use and was in and out of prison. I lost all my self-worth, and it also affected my family, especially my mother. I had got to a point where I felt I was almost using drugs against my will, as I couldn’t see a way out, and I felt my life was over.

After reaching the desperation point, I went into rehab for 17 weeks, and this started my journey to recovery. I started volunteering at SIAS, then moved on to a part-time role and now work for SIAS full-time as an Outreach Practitioner, helping others on their journey through recovery. I love my role, and it has given me a real purpose in life to help others turn their lives around, too.

My personal life has also been transformed. I am now married, have enjoyed lots of wonderful holidays, and my friendship group has totally changed.

In April, I started my new role as an Outreach Practitioner for Aquarius, part of the SIAS partnership, a role that I could not have dreamed of a few years ago. I was previously a Peer Support Worker at SIAS, and the time I have spent in this role has given me the experience I need to take on my new position.

In my new role as an Outreach Practitioner, I help those who have issues with drugs and alcohol but have become disengaged and don’t know where to turn next. I want to find out what the barriers are for not engaging with services and how I can support them. I will be especially reaching out to people who are being discharged from prison or those on probation, where my lived experience, knowledge of the criminal justice system and understanding of the triggers that affect those leaving prison will be a great help.

Today, SIAS attended a Men's Health Day hosted by Knowle Surgery, GPS Healthcare which aimed to promote men's health, encourage early help-seeking, and raise awareness of key issues affecting wellbeing in the Solihull community.

Keenan Clarke from the SIAS team delivered information and education around drug and alcohol use, engaged with patients and supported awareness-raising. SIAS has been raising awareness of men's health issues as part of Men's Health Week, 15th-21st June.

If you missed the event and would like advice on how alcohol and/ or drugs affect Men's Health, then please get in touch with us on 0121 301 4141, email [email protected] or visit www.sias-solihull.org.uk

It’s Men’s Health Week and we’re encouraging men to open up and talk about their health issues and look at how even simple lifestyle changes can really make a difference to our physical and mental health.

Rob, one of our Outreach Practitioners, explains here how to manage anxiety through a simple breathing technique which can help in stressful situations and when feeling overwhelmed.

50% of men have struggled with mental health difficulties at some point, yet fewer than half have sought medical advice (BUPA Wellbeing Index). All our practitioners offer one-to-one sessions and can help you to find a way to manage difficult feelings and tackle your issues in confidence.

If you are struggling with mental health issues caused by alcohol or drugs and need help, please contact us on 0121 301 4141, email [email protected] or visit www.sias-solihull.org.uk

The Heart of Recovery

Today, we’re shining a light on our nurses.

Our nurses take the time to truly understand you - not just your physical health, but your mental wellbeing too, and what you really need as an individual.

They listen. They hold space for fear, anxiety, and the weight you may be carrying, always without judgement and always with compassion.

Our nurses offer support that goes beyond care. They provide harm reduction advice, help you feel safe and supported, and walk alongside you as you begin to build a healthier future at your own pace.

They are steady, understanding, and present in the moments that matter most.

Our nurses are at the heart of the Recovery Journey.

The Solihull Neurodivergence and Community Safety Conference, held on 9 June at Newlands Bishop Farm, brought together professionals, community organisations, and people with lived experience to explore the intersection of neurodiversity and community safety.

At SIAS we recognise that some neurodivergent people may be more vulnerable to substance misuse, highlighting the importance of early support and neurodiversity-informed care.

The conference was opened by Simon Foster, Police and Crime Commissioner, who set the scene for the day by emphasising the importance of partnership working and inclusive approaches across community safety services. The keynote address was delivered by Dr Hope Kent, who highlighted the need for greater understanding of neurodivergence within systems such as policing, safeguarding, and public services.

This was followed by a series of further talks, workshops, and facilitated discussions from practitioners and partners across policing, health, education, and the voluntary sector.

A central focus of the event was improving how services respond to neurodivergent individuals, particularly in situations of vulnerability or risk. Emphasis was placed on trauma-informed, person-centred approaches, as well as strengthening multi-agency collaboration.

Overall, the conference underscored the importance of inclusive practice, co-production, and raising awareness to ensure safer, more supportive communities across Solihull.

The SIAS team attending the conference L to R: Mark Pemberton, Steve Scrimshaw, Jo Cartwright.
