This diagram illustrates international clinical guidelines for the treatment approach to osteoarthritis of the knee.
You'll see that the big green part, the first line of treatment, is exercise, education & weight control. And even if second & third line treatment is required, these factors are included with them as well.
Exercise & education are core principles of our daily physiotherapy practice so our physiotherapists are well placed to empower patients with the tools to manage their arthritic knees. We also have other tools in our toolbox that may help relieve pain & swelling, common symptoms of arthritis, allowing more comfortable exercising.
The knee is the most common site for arthritis affecting 1 in 5 adults over 45 years (Lawrence et al 2008). It can reduce physical activity & have a negative affect on quality of life.
