Baking might look like a simple everyday activity, but in Occupational Therapy, it's a powerful way to help people regain independence, confidence, and essential life skills.
When someone is recovering from a brain injury, tasks like measuring ingredients, following a recipe, sequencing steps, using kitchen equipment, and managing time can be challenging. Through meaningful activities such as baking, occupational therapists use evidence-based therapy and outcome measures to help individuals practice and improve:
- Cognitive skills – planning, problem-solving, memory, and attention
- Fine motor skills – grasping, stirring, pouring, and decorating
- Upper limb function – strength, coordination, and dexterity
- Safety awareness – using equipment and managing risks
- Independence and confidence in everyday life
Most importantly, baking is a purposeful and enjoyable activity that connects therapy to real-life goals.
At Peartree we have found across clients that rehabilitation works best when it focuses on the activities that matter most to the individual. Because recovery isn't just about improving function, it's about helping people return to the things they love.
