This is what training at Hengistbury Head Outdoors looks like.

Different people.
Different ages.
Different abilities.
Different goals.

Some want to get stronger.

Some want to move better.

Some are looking to improve their fitness.

Others simply want to stay strong and capable as they get older.

Nobody needs to be the fittest or strongest person in the room.

The challenge is your challenge.

You work at your level. You push yourself. You support the people around you.

And hopefully, you leave feeling a little stronger and more confident than when you arrived.

That’s what I love about training at Hengistbury Head Outdoors.

Real people, training together, for their own reasons.

All you have to do is turn up and start.

Nearly 6 months into my shoulder recovery now and it’s still a strange one.

I have about 80% range of movement which is good, so I am told.

I can deadlift, row and move a reasonable amount of weight and actually feel pretty comfortable doing it.

Then the physio hands me a resistance band or gives me what looks like a really simple exercise…

And it absolutely humbles me.

Some of those little movements are still far harder than lifting a decent weight.

I suppose that’s the difference between being strong and actually getting everything working properly again.

So I’m still mixing the two.

Doing the strength work where I can, but sticking with the bands, mobility and all those annoying little accessory exercises that I’d probably rather avoid!

There are days when the shoulder feels really good.

Then there are days when one tiny movement reminds me that I’m still recovering from a pretty major repair.

Almost 6 months in.

Still a long way to go, but definitely a long way from where I started.

Just keep turning up and doing the work.

Better morning. Better energy. Better life.

Most people think a morning routine needs to be complicated.

It doesn’t.

In fact, some of the things we do first thing are draining our energy before the day has even started.

❌ Open the inbox → immediately absorb everyone else’s problems
❌ Scroll the phone → lose 20 minutes without noticing
❌ Coffee and nothing else → wonder why energy disappears later
❌ Rush out the door → start the day already feeling behind

I prefer to keep things simple.

My mornings aren’t perfect. Especially while I’m still working around my shoulder recovery.

But I try to create a bit of momentum before the rest of the world gets involved.

My routine looks something like this:

1️⃣ Get up → drink some water
2️⃣ Take my daily creatine
3️⃣ Do some mobility and shoulder rehab
4️⃣ Get outside, move and get some morning daylight
5️⃣ Have a decent breakfast with plenty of protein
6️⃣ Clean your teeth

Nothing groundbreaking.

But that’s the point.

You don’t need a 15-step morning routine.

You need a few useful habits that you can actually repeat.

And one of the easiest ways to make them stick is to stack them together.

One action becomes the trigger for the next.

Water → movement → daylight → breakfast.

And suddenly you’ve started the day doing something positive for yourself before emails, work and everybody else’s demands take over.

If you’re currently doing none of this, don’t try to change everything tomorrow.

Pick two things.

Do them every morning for the next seven days.

Then add another.

Because a good morning isn’t about being perfect.

It’s about creating momentum.

And when you start the day looking after your body, there’s a much better chance you’ll continue making better decisions for the rest of it.

Better morning. Better energy. Better life.

Oh… and don’t forget to wash and clean your teeth.

SIX MONTHS DOWN.
SIX MONTHS TO GO.

Shoulder recovery really is a strange old journey.

At roughly six months post rotator cuff surgery, I can deadlift.

I can do landmine exercises.

I can dumbbell row.

All relatively comfortably.

Then my physio gives me something that looks ridiculously simple…

Balance something on my hand.

Drop and catch a ball.

Or simply lie on my back, palms facing upwards above my forehead, and let gravity gently take my shoulder down.

And that can literally bring tears to my eyes.

It’s a good reminder that being able to lift something heavy doesn’t necessarily mean everything underneath is fully recovered.

Different movements. Different ranges. Different demands on the shoulder.

This was always going to be a 12-month recovery, not a quick fix.

So I’m not going to rush it.

I’m not going to let my ego decide what I should be able to do.

I’ll keep following the programme.

Keep doing the rehab.

Keep training what I can train.

And keep getting a little stronger, a little more mobile and a little more confident.

Some days progress looks like a deadlift.

Other days it’s moving your arm another centimetre without wincing.

Both count.

Still recovering. Still training. Still moving forward.

NOW is the best time to start.

Not next month.
Not when you feel fitter.
Not when you’ve lost a bit of weight first.

Now.

Age Strong is about helping you build strength, improve your balance and mobility, and keep doing the things you enjoy as you get older.

You don’t need to already be fit.

You don’t need any experience with weights or gyms.

And you certainly don’t need to keep up with anyone else.

We meet you where you are and help you progress from there.

Whether you’re in your 50s, 60s, 70s or beyond, getting stronger now is an investment in what you want your body to be capable of in the years ahead.

The hardest part is often just starting.

So come and join us at

Age Strong. Stay capable. Keep participating in your life, not spectating from the sidelines.

The best time to start?

NOW.

AGE STRONG. It’s never too late to start.

This was Age Strong at Hengistbury Head Outdoors last Monday.

Different people. Different abilities. Different starting points.

But everyone there for the same reason. To keep moving, build strength and stay capable as they get older.

Age Strong isn’t about lifting the heaviest weights or trying to keep up with anyone else.

We work on the things that matter:

• Strength
• Balance
• Mobility
• Confidence
• Moving well in everyday life

Every exercise can be adapted to suit you, so it doesn’t matter if you already exercise or you haven’t done anything for years.

You start where you are and progress from there.

Have a look at the video. This is what Age Strong is really about.

You need to participate in your life, not be a spectator.

Come and join us at Hengistbury Head Outdoors and start getting stronger.

Shoulder recovery update.

It’s still not where I want it to be. I haven’t got full movement through all ranges yet, and there are still exercises I can’t do.

That said, I’m making progress.

This week I’ve started deadlifting again. The weight is sensible, and I’m not trying to prove anything. I’m just happy to be able to do it.

It’s easy to get frustrated when recovery takes longer than you’d like, but when I look back to where I was a few months ago, I’ve come a long way.

The goal hasn’t changed. Keep doing the rehab, keep getting stronger, and let time do its job.

Onwards.
