After caring for people on the frontline of maternity care for more than a decade, an idea shared around the kitchen table led Siobhan to design a tool that is "exactly what clinical staff need in emergencies".

Siobhan had seen how difficult it can be to accurately document events during fast-moving emergencies while delivering the care needed. With support from our Trust's Innovation Fellowship, Siobhan developed the solution - ScribeMat - and now she has been shortlisted for "Midwife of the Year" at the Nursing Times Awards!

"ScribeMat makes it easier to record and track what is happening and ensures important information isn't missed."

It reduces paperwork by creating a digital record in real time, removing the need for midwives to write notes on paper and later enter them into the electronic patient record.

Staff have described ScribeMat as "exactly what they need", "intuitive" and "easy to use", and families have said it would give them reassurance during difficult times.

Siobhan said: "My ambition is to help position our Trust as a leader in maternity innovation. I want us to be a Trust that listens to frontline staff, learns from experience and turns ideas into meaningful improvements for patient care.

"Being shortlisted for this award as a result of developing ScribeMat is an incredible honour."

Symptoms of ovarian cancer aren't always obvious – would you know when to seek help?

We are running a short, anonymous survey about ovarian cancer symptoms and what people would do if they experienced them.

Earlier diagnosis can make a real difference to treatment options and outcomes. By taking part, you'll help the local NHS better understand awareness of ovarian cancer symptoms and support work to increase earlier diagnosis across Essex.

Armed Forces Day in Southend to Go Ahead with Revised Programme Due to Extreme Weather

Southend-on-Sea City Council wishes to reassure residents and visitors that Armed Forces Day this Saturday is not cancelled.

However, due to the Met Office Weather Warning and forecast high temperatures of up to 32Β°C, the programme of events has been amended to ensure the safety of participants and the public.

As part of these changes, the planned march along the High Street will no longer take place. In its place, a shortened open-air Service of Thanksgiving will still go ahead at Victoria Circus, at the head of the High Street, beginning at 10.45am. This will provide a safe and respectful opportunity for the community to come together and honour the Armed Forces.

Importantly, the day’s celebrations will otherwise continue, with military displays, vehicles, and charity stands all still taking place as planned, ensuring there remains plenty for residents and visitors to see and engage with throughout the day.

While this decision will be disappointing to many, these adjustments have been made following careful consideration of the risks posed by extreme heat, particularly for older veterans, cadets, and those wearing ceremonial uniform.

The Mayor of Southend-on-Sea City Council said:
β€œArmed Forces Day is an important opportunity for our city to come together and recognise the dedication and sacrifice of our service personnel, past and present.

I want to be absolutely clear that this event is still going ahead. However, given the Met Office’s Weather Warning and the very real risks associated with such high temperatures, we have taken the decision to amend the programme and remove the High Street march in the interests of safety.

We are pleased that the Service of Thanksgiving and the wider displays and activities will still take place, allowing us to show our continued respect and support for the Armed Forces community.”

Attendees who plan to come to the service are encouraged to:

β€’ Stay hydrated and bring water
β€’ Wear appropriate clothing, including sun protection
β€’ Follow guidance from event stewards on the day

Southend-on-Sea City Council remains firmly committed to supporting the Armed Forces community and ensuring that their service is recognised with dignity and respect.
