Martin despite numerous health difficulties has continued to show up for his recovery, Martin also supported us Sunday with the Hadleigh Community Fare which we very grateful for.

Here's what Martin had to say

Recovery has given me contact with my children again, & I'm six months clean
Aspirations means Everything to me , it is the first time I feel like I have had support behind me, that is not something I felt I had before I came here, someone to believe in me. Just give Aspirations a try!”

Alicia joined the team earlier this year. Alicia openly shares her mental health struggles and is the embodiment of our mental health doesn't not defined as a person. Her lived experience is invaluable to us at Aspirations.

Alicia successfully launched our art exhibition & is a valued member of our community.

Here's what she had to say

“Aspirations to me is a new start, it means a lot to me. Putting time and energy into work that makes a difference to people is incredibly important and this is completely different to anything I have ever experienced. At Aspirations everyone is treated as a PERSON first, and that is how everywhere should be.”

Today, our Recovery Month story is a little different.
Recovery is meant to be enjoyed. It is about community, connection, and bringing people together.
At the weekend, our Operations Manager, Elliot, took one staff member, one peer mentor, and one current attendee to the Foundation2Change reunion event, hosted as part of Recovery Month.
It was a fantastic opportunity to see how other organisations support the people they serve, while also meeting new people and building new connections.
Recovery works best when people and organisations come together.
As you can see from the photos, everyone had a wonderful time, and we look forward to watching Foundation2Change continue to grow and thrive.
Option 2: Professional & Inspirational
Today's Recovery Month story highlights the power of connection.
Recovery is about more than individual progress. It is about community, support, and creating meaningful relationships.
Over the weekend, our Operations Manager, Elliot, attended the Foundation2Change reunion event with a member of staff, a peer mentor, and one of our current attendees.
The event provided a valuable opportunity to learn how other organisations support their communities, share experiences, and build new connections.
Recovery is most effective when people and organisations work together.
Judging by the smiles in the photos, a wonderful day was had by all. We are excited to see Foundation 2 Change oundation2Change continue to grow and make a positive impact.

Michaela is our voulnteer coordinator who is a family member with a substance misuse problem. Michaela is a valued member of our community.

Here's what Michaela had to say

“I think it is amazing the work that goes on, and what Aspirations does for the community. I love working here as when I leave I always feel like I have been able to help or make a difference to someone. It is a charity that is very close to my heart”

Rob completed our 12 step program & came back to peer mentor, he supported with DIY when we got our new venue and then volunteered in the shop.

Rob & his family have supported Aspirations & gone above & beyond

Here's what Rob had to say.

Recovery has taught me how to live by spiritual principles. Today, I strive to be accountable, reliable, honest, loving, caring and compassionate. I try to put others before myself and live in a way that reflects the values I have learned throughout my journey.
The list of what recovery has given me is endless. Recovery gave me my family back. It gave me the chance to be a son, a father, a brother and an uncle again. It gave me the most amazing fiancée and the privilege of being a stepdad to her children. It gave me genuine friendships and the ability to be a true friend to others. It gave me the opportunity to support my family and build a life I can be proud of.
Most importantly, recovery gave me self-worth, self-esteem and self-love. Instead of hating the man I saw in the mirror, I learned to love and accept him. Today, I am living a life beyond my wildest dreams, and each day continues to get better.
I have now been in recovery for 2 years, 11 months and 1 day, and I am incredibly grateful for every single one of those days.
Aspirations gave me a chance when no one else would. It is where my journey truly began outside of a 12-step programme. It helped me take the first steps towards trusting myself and building the life I have today. Everything I have gained through recovery started with opportunities like the one Aspirations gave me.
Aspirations will always hold a special place in my heart, as will every member of staff. Honestly, words cannot fully express what they mean to me or what they have done for me. They are all truly inspirational people who played a part in helping me rebuild my life. The memories I made there, the support I received and the belief they showed in me will stay with me forever.
I will always be grateful to Aspirations for helping me become the man I am today.

Chris was our first volunteer, he painted, he supported fundraisers, he supported those coming through our doors - he gave back freely so it's no surprise to us he's doing as well as he is.

Recovery means stepping out of the darkness of addiction and walking a new path. It's given me a new life and a new outlook on myself and everything around me. My clean time is just over 7 years.
Aspirations is where I learned that I am actually capable and that I don't have to let my past control my future.

Today, Aspirations teamed up with HARP Homelessness Charity and GEMS, two organisations doing fantastic work within our community. GEMS continue to do an amazing job helping to keep the Woodgrange Drive Estate clean and welcoming, and we were proud to support their efforts.
We were joined by some of our Day Program attendees, and I am incredibly proud of every person who gave their time freely to support the community.
When Aspirations was founded, one of our core beliefs, and something we have always fiercely advocated for in Southend, was visible recovery. Today, we did exactly that.
To offer hope to those still struggling in our community, we need to be visible. We need to be out on the streets, showing through our actions that recovery is possible. Recovery is not demonstrated through words alone. Recovery is demonstrated through action, through service, and through giving back to the communities that support us.
We take so much from our communities during difficult times, so giving back is a fundamental part of recovery and something we are deeply committed to. Today was a wonderful opportunity to do just that, while standing side by side with organisations that share our commitment to supporting local people and creating positive change.
We are incredibly grateful to HARP for joining us today and for the vital work they do within our community. We are equally thankful to GEMS for welcoming us and for the dedication they continue to show in caring for our local neighbourhoods. Partnership working is essential, and together we can make a real difference.
Thank you to everyone who got involved today. You represented visible recovery in the best possible way, showing that recovery is real, recovery is possible, and that those in recovery have so much to give back.

Recovery Month 2026 | Voices of Recovery
September is Recovery Month. A time to celebrate recovery, resilience, and the remarkable courage of those we have the privilege to support.
Every single person who walks through the doors of Aspirations shows extraordinary bravery. Choosing hope over hopelessness. Choosing life over darkness. Choosing recovery, one day at a time.
Abstinence-based recovery is not for the faint-hearted. It demands strength, honesty and determination. The journey can be challenging, but the rewards are life-changing.
Throughout September, we'll be sharing stories from people with lived experience who have weathered the storms of addiction and found a new way of life in recovery.

What does recovery mean to you ?

"Recovery means freedom from a life of active addiction."

What has recovery given you?

"Recovery has given me almost everything I lost and more."

How long have you been abstinent?
"I've been abstinent for 2.5 years."

What does Aspirations mean to you?

"Aspirations is the gateway to a new life and a new journey in recovery."

To every attendee, every family member who allows us to walk alongside them, and every person who supports this work, thank you.
A special thank you to our funders, supporters and donors. Your belief in recovery helps make these journeys possible.
Because recovery doesn't happen alone. ❤️

Good afternoon all

Many people assume that receiving National Lottery funding means our financial challenges have disappeared. Sadly, that isn't the reality.
The funding we secured in April is restricted and can only be used for specific core operational costs. At the same time, we have seen a significant reduction in regular donations and support, which are essential for keeping many other aspects of our service running. The need for people to access our services grow weekly.
To help bridge this gap, we are looking for support with our upcoming fundraising events. We would love to hear from you if you can:
✅ Donate a raffle or auction prize
✅ Organise a fundraising event
✅ Host a charity collection pot in your business
✅ Introduce us to potential corporate sponsors or funders
Your support enables us to continue making a difference, and every contribution is genuinely appreciated.
Thank you for your kindness and support. ❤️
