2 stone off…only part way through the journey, when the injections had to stop due to gallstone. Without them the weight was creeping back up.

This is when my client came to me, we are now 4 session in, the rebound weight has come off and she is moving on with continued weight loss.

But this isn’t the big win 🎉

The biggest change is that she’s no longer relying on a medication to make the decisions for her.

She’s learnt how to recognise the difference between physical and emotional hunger.

She understands the thoughts that used to pull her towards food.

She tunes into her body’s signals instead of ignoring them, she now understands what drives food noise and how to quieten it.

She makes food choices that leave her feeling good and satisfied.

She is responding to stress without automatically reaching for food as the coping mechanism.

She’s building habits she can carry with her for life.

But something else has changed too!!

She’s rewriting her story, she is not using a diet mindset, no restriction. She is nourishing herself…with food, with compassion, and the ability to make the choices rather than denial and restriction.

Instead of seeing herself as someone who needs medication to stay in control, she’s discovering that she has the knowledge, awareness and confidence to do it herself.

That shift in identity changes everything.

Because now she’s not only changing her own relationship with food, she’s changing her family’s too. The meals they eat, the conversations they have around food, and the example she’s setting every day.

The GLP-1 helped suppress her appetite.

It didn’t teach those skills.

GLP-1 medications can be an incredibly valuable tool for many people. They can reduce appetite and create the breathing space needed for change.

But long-term success comes from developing the skills that remain when the medication isn’t there.

The goal isn’t simply to lose weight.
It’s to become the kind of person who no longer needs to battle with food every day.

That’s where lasting change happens.

Most people think metabolic health starts with what you eat.

But one of the first signals your metabolism receives each day isn’t food... it’s light.

Stepping outside into natural morning light within the first hour of waking helps synchronise your body clock.

That clock doesn’t just influence sleep, it also regulates the hormones involved in appetite, blood sugar control and energy metabolism.

When your circadian rhythm is well aligned, your body is generally better at:

☀️ Regulating blood glucose
☀️ Supporting insulin sensitivity
☀️ Producing energy more efficiently
☀️ Balancing hunger hormones
☀️ Sleeping more deeply, which further benefits metabolic health.

Even 5–15 minutes of natural daylight can help, especially if you can get outside rather than viewing it through a window.

Think of morning light as a metabolic cue. It tells your brain and body, “The day has begun,” helping to coordinate countless biological processes that influence how you feel and function.

If you’re trying to improve your metabolic health, reduce food cravings, or support weight loss, don’t just focus on what’s on your plate.

Start by stepping outside.
Sometimes the smallest daily habits create the biggest biological changes.

Years ago, I may have focused on the calories.

Today, I’m more interested in what these foods are telling my body.

✔️ Are they helping me feel satisfied

✔️Are they supporting my gut health

✔️Are they helping reduce food noise

✔️Do they reduce inflammation.

Foods like berries, pomegranate, seeds, rocket, olive oil, cold potatoes contain compounds that support beneficial gut bacteria, in particular one called Akkermansia.

Current research on Akkermansia shows that it helps to improve metabolic health. ❤️🧠🫀

Akkermansia reduces inflammation by strengthening the gut lining, which then naturally supports the release of GLP-1, aiding appetite regulation.

Protein aids satiety, but its fibre and polyphenols that to speak to your gut through the bacteria formation.

The gut and the brain are in constant communication.

If you want to quieten food noise you need to learn the language that your food speaks.

When food noise gets quieter, healthy choices often become easier. This isn’t willpower it biology.

Have you noticed certain foods keep you satisfied for hours while others leave you searching the cupboards an hour later?

Beliefs don’t just sit in the mind. They shape biology.

Research shows that belief can alter the body’s ghrelin response, this is the hormone associated with hunger and appetite regulation.

This was demonstrated in the famous Mind Over Milkshakes study.

Participants were given the exact same milkshake on two occasions. The only difference was what they were told about it.

When participants believed they were drinking an indulgent, high calorie shake, ghrelin levels fell much more sharply after consumption, indicating a greater feeling of satiety.

When they believed they were drinking a low-calorie, sensible shake, the ghrelin response was much flatter (lower satiety levels).

Same milkshake.
Different beliefs.
Different physiological responses.

Food noise isn’t just biological, it’s also psychological.

The expectations we have about food, hunger, and our ability to manage our weight can influence how we experience our appetite.

So if you’re coming off the jabs and constantly telling yourself, I’m going to be hungry all the time, that belief may become part of the problem.

The brain is not separate from the body.

What we expect can influence what we experience.

Before even considering antidepressants, 62% of people mistake hunger and thirst signals. So before you reach for the crisps 🥵

We are currently in the midst of a heatwave, so If you suddenly find yourself craving snacks or feeling a hollow hunger, your brain might be playing a trick on you.

A landmark study in Physiology & Behavior found that 62% of the time, people mistake thirst for hunger, reaching for food when their body is actually begging for water.

This neurological mix-up can lead to heat exhaustion as the brains wires get crossed:

* Shared Brain Space: Both hunger and thirst are regulated by the exact same control center: your hypothalamus.

* Twin Symptoms: Mild dehydration mimics hunger perfectly. It causes low energy, brain fog, irritability, and a hollow stomach.

* The Food Trap: Your brain knows food contains water. When dehydrated, it triggers a food craving to desperately pull fluid from whatever you eat.

⚠️ The Antidepressant Zone

If you take antidepressants (like SSRIs, SNRIs, or TCAs), this heatwave requires extra caution. These medications create a double-whammy side effect:

1. They blunt your thirst: They disrupt your internal thermostat, and can blunt thirst even when your body is overheating.

1. They amp up hunger: They can block specific receptors, turning off your “I’m full” switch and triggering carbohydrate cravings.

When it is blazing hot outside, a food craving is very often hidden dehydration.

💧 The Heatwave Rule
Don’t trust your appetite right now. Next time you feel an unexpected craving, use the 20-Minute Rule:

* Drink a large glass of water or use an electrolyte.

* Wait 20 minutes for your hypothalamus to register the fluid.

* If you are still genuinely hungry, eat. If the craving vanished, your body was desperate for cooling hydration.
