I eat chocolate exactly the way I used to drink alcohol.

Same feeling. Once I start, I don't stop. No brakes — just straight through it, then the crash after.

Took me a couple of years sober to actually notice it. And when I did, it hit hard, because it's not new. I've been like this with sweet stuff since I was a kid. Long before alcohol was ever part of the picture.

So it was never really about the alcohol. That was just where it showed up loudest. The rest of it was there the whole time.

Anyone else notice a pattern that was there long before the thing everyone focused on?

I couldn't be the actor any longer.

What started as social drinking had quietly become something else. A way of coping.

And what I understand now — looking back with an ADHD diagnosis — is that I was self-medicating without even knowing it. Just trying to feel normal. To quiet the noise.

It didn't stop overnight. There were failed attempts. But eventually I reached out for help.

And that's when everything changed.

After the hyperfixation wears off, this is what happens next.

For a neurodivergent brain the cycle is real — intense focus, all in, everything firing. And then the dip. Not a full burnout, but a soft one. That quiet phase where the motivation just isn't there and even the things you love feel heavy.

In the old days I'd have reached for a drink. I don't do that anymore. So now I have to sit with it, understand it, and accept that it will pass.

Because it always does.
