New research shows a direct link between treating hearing loss and protecting brain health.

A major clinical trial by Frank Lin, James Pike, Marilyn Albert and colleagues, published in The Lancet in 2023, followed nearly 1,000 older adults aged 70-84 with untreated hearing loss over three years. Those given hearing aids and audiologic counselling saw their cognitive decline slow by 48% compared to those who received health education alone — with the strongest effect seen in those already at higher risk.

Ears ringing after the festival?

That ringing is a warning, not a souvenir.

Sustained noise above roughly 85 decibels causes wear, and a surprising amount of an ordinary summer sits above that line. Live music. The strimmer. Power tools in the garage. The ringing usually settles by morning; the wear underneath it doesn't undo itself.

This is the one kind of hearing change that's genuinely preventable, and the fixes are dull but effective. Proper filtered earplugs at gigs — the ones that lower the volume rather than muffling everything. Ear defenders for the noisy jobs. A couple of notches off the headphones.

Still ringing the surgery about blocked ears?

A lot of people don't realise this has changed. Syringing is no longer available on the NHS in England, and wax removal isn't one of the core services GPs are obliged to provide. So the route many of us grew up with has quietly disappeared.

We use microsuction instead — no water, no flushing. The audiologist works under magnification with a fine, low-pressure suction tube, so the wax and the ear canal stay in clear view throughout and nothing needs to touch the sensitive canal wall. With syringing, the water went in and the wax came out unseen. Microsuction is quicker, cleaner and more comfortable, and for hard, impacted wax it's considerably safer.
