Staying Safe in Hot Weather

Hot weather is expected across Warwickshire this week. While many of us enjoy the sunshine, high temperatures can be dangerous for older people and can quickly lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion and other serious health problems.

If you have an elderly relative, friend or neighbour, take a few minutes to check they’re coping with the heat.

Simple ways to stay safe include:

• Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
• Keep curtains or blinds closed during the hottest part of the day.
• Wear light, loose-fitting clothing.
• Avoid going outside during the hottest part of the day.
• Eat light meals and limit alcohol and caffeine, which can contribute to dehydration.

A simple phone call or visit could make all the difference to someone living alone.

If you or a loved one needs compassionate home care and support, New Age Care is here to help.

Deciding what level of care someone needs can be difficult, but a simple starting point is to look at their day-to-day needs and whether anything has changed recently.

Start by considering:
• Can they manage personal care such as washing, dressing, and eating on their own?
• Are there any signs of memory loss, confusion, or missed medication?
• Are they becoming more isolated or struggling with mood and motivation?
• Is the home still safe for them to move around in without risk of falls or accidents?

If you’re unsure, try noting down what you observe over a week. Small patterns often become clearer when written down.

We offer free care assessments to help families understand exactly what level of support is needed and what options are available.

Call us today to arrange your free assessment - we’re here to help you make the right decision with confidence.

Why Does Dementia Make Them Think It’s Morning at 2:00 AM?

If your loved one woke up at 2:00 AM, got fully dressed and was ready to start the day, you might wonder, “How can they think it’s morning?”

For someone living with dementia, it can be very real. Their sense of time and their body clock may no longer work in the way they once did.

So what’s happening?

1. Their body clock can become disrupted
Dementia can affect the brain’s ability to recognise time and respond to the usual cues of day and night. So 2:00 AM may not feel like 2:00 AM to them.

2. Being awake can feel like a reason to get up
If they wake feeling alert, their brain may simply decide that it’s time to start the day. They may genuinely believe they have slept through the night.

3. Small things can send the wrong signal
A light left on, the TV playing, hearing someone moving around, or even getting up to use the bathroom can make it harder to recognise that it’s still night-time.

What can you do?

Don’t argue with the clock.

Saying “Look, it’s 2:00 AM!” or trying to prove they’re wrong can sometimes make them more confused or anxious.

Instead, keep things calm and simple.

Try:
“Let’s sit down for a moment.”
“How about a little drink?”
“It’s still quiet outside. Let’s have a rest.”

Keep the room dark and quiet where possible. Speak softly, avoid bright lights and give them a little time to settle.

Sometimes, those few calm minutes are enough for the urge to get up and start the day to pass.

At New Age Care, we understand that dementia can bring challenges at any hour — including the middle of the night. You don’t have to manage them alone.

Thank you, Ian Williams Racing, for such a wonderful event! 🐴

Our clients had a fantastic time visiting Ian Williams Racing and getting a special behind-the-scenes look at the world of horse racing.

They had the opportunity to see the racehorses up close, visit the stables and learn more about how the horses are cared for, trained and prepared for racing. It was fascinating to see the daily routine and the special bond between the horses and the people who look after them.

Spending time with horses can be particularly enjoyable for older people. Gentle interaction with animals can encourage conversation, movement and social connection, while being around horses can also be calming and uplifting.

A wonderful day, a new experience and lots of happy memories for our clients. ❤️

When someone you love is living with dementia, the challenges aren't only practical, they're emotional too.

Many family carers experience stress, grief, guilt, uncertainty, and even loneliness while supporting someone with dementia. These feelings are completely understandable, yet they're often not talked about enough.

Our latest blog explores the emotional impact of caring for someone with dementia, along with practical ways carers can protect their own wellbeing while continuing to provide compassionate support.

If you're caring for a loved one, or you know someone who is, we hope you'll find it helpful.
