If you’re feeling ALL the feelings about the school gates reopening… you’re not alone 💚.

Here’s to a little routine, a little breathing space, and whatever comes with it.

Ever noticed how different sides of you show up with different people?

That doesn't make you fake.

It makes you human.

I don't know who needs to hear this today, but...

Your brain isn't a crystal ball.

It might be going to the worst case scenario and telling you everything's about to fall apart. But that doesn't mean it will.

Our brains can be brilliant at spotting danger, but they're not always brilliant at judging what's actually likely.

You don't need to have a "good reason" to find something difficult.

And someone else's struggles don't make yours any less real.

If it matters to you, we can be curious about it.

If something is taking up space in your life, it's worth giving it some space here too.

All of your emotions are valid - you never have to justify them to me.

Some coping strategies are obvious.

People cry. Get angry. Shut themselves away. Others look... really capable.

The house is tidy. The inbox is under control. Everyone else is looked after. Work gets done.

From the outside, they seem absolutely "fine". But sometimes being busy, productive, helpful, organised... is the coping strategy.

Getting on with things is what they've learned to do when life feels hard. And often it's worked for them for a very long time.

Therapy can be one place to wonder what might be sitting underneath all that doing.

Many of us were never taught how to identify what we're feeling.

So we reach for broad labels like "stressed", "fine", or "upset".

Research on affect labelling (naming emotions) suggests that if we can precisely name what we're feeling it can help reduce the emotional intensity and make the emotion easier to manage.

It doesn't make the emotion disappear but it does help us understand what is actually happening.

Sometimes a useful question is:

"What am I feeling, exactly?".

And if you struggle to think of many emotions just search "emotion wheel" where you'll find more emotions than you could ever imagine!

A single critical comment can stick with us for years.

Yet a genuine compliment can be dismissed in seconds.

An inner voice goes straight to "They're just being nice" or "They're only saying that."

For a lot of us, the inner critic gets treated like a reliable source, while kindness gets questioned and cross-examined.

I'm not sure the critic deserves the final say!

Helping people make a little more room for their more compassionate voice is something I often work on with my clients.

My role is never to "fix".Instead it's to create the conditions for change.
