Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust

Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust The largest orthopaedic hospital in the UK. An international centre of excellence. This broad range of services is unique within the NHS.

The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust (RNOH) is the largest orthopaedic hospital in the UK, and is regarded as a leader in the field of orthopaedics both in the UK and world-wide. The RNOH provides a comprehensive range of neuro-musculoskeletal health care, ranging from acute spinal injury or complex bone tumour to orthopaedic medicine and specialist rehabilitation for chronic back pai

n sufferers. As a national centre of excellence, the RNOH treats patients from across the country, many of whom have been referred by other hospital consultants for second opinions or for treatment of complex or rare conditions. Patients benefit from a team of highly specialised consultants, many of whom are nationally and internationally recognised for their expertise and experience. Consultants are supported in their work by nurses, therapists and other specialist clinical staff who are trained experts in their particular fields of orthopaedic care. The RNOH plays a major role in teaching, with 20% of all UK orthopaedic surgeons receive training here. Our teaching and clinical effectiveness are enhanced by our work in research and development and academic links with University College, London. Research departments at Stanmore include the Institute of Orthopaedics, the Centre for Disability Research and Innovation, the Institute of Human Performance and the Centre for Biomedical Engineering. The RNOH works closely with other hospitals and trusts, with whom we have joint appointments to ensure maximum availability of specialist skills for patients. Our patients benefit from access to ASPIRE leisure centre which is located on site and hosts first-class facilities for able-bodied and disabled people.

πŸ”¦ Spotlight on Sarcoma Study Day returns in 2026

Following the success of last year's inaugural event at RNOH, we're delighted to welcome healthcare professionals to this year's Spotlight on Sarcoma Study Day.

This free one-day educational event will take delegates through the entire sarcoma pathway, from first presentation and diagnosis through treatment, rehabilitation and palliative care. The programme includes talks and case discussions delivered by specialist sarcoma experts across radiology, pathology, surgery, oncology, physiotherapy and palliative care.

Last year's event received outstanding feedback, bringing together therapists, radiographers, histopathologists, nurse practitioners, psychologists, surgeons and patients under the theme of 'Bridging Knowledge and Practice.'

Whether you're new to sarcoma or work outside a specialist sarcoma service, this event offers a valuable opportunity to:

βœ… Build your knowledge of sarcoma care

London Sarcoma Service goes the extra mile for Sarcoma Awareness Month

To mark Sarcoma Awareness Month this July, the team at the London Sarcoma Service set themselves an ambitious fitness challenge to raise awareness of sarcoma while working together towards a shared goal.

The team aimed to virtually travel from RNOH to each of the UK's bone sarcoma centres. Partway through the challenge, they decided to raise the bar even higher by completing the return journey as well – a total target of 1,026 miles.

A large group of multi-disciplinary team, including surgeons, oncologists, nurses, histopathologists and administrative staff from RNOH and UCLH took part. Together, they walked, ran, swam, cycled, danced, played cricket and tennis, white-water rafted and even zip-lined in locations around the world. Along the way, they were joined by friends, family and even a host of animal companions.

Thanks to their enthusiasm, teamwork and the efforts of some particularly active team members, they surpassed their target ahead of schedule. By 24 July, the team had travelled an impressive 1,106 miles.

A fantastic achievement by everyone involved – congratulations to the entire team for going the extra mile to raise awareness of sarcoma.

This week, many of our dedicated volunteers came together to mark the 10th anniversary of the RNOH buggy service.

The celebrations also provided an opportunity to recognise another remarkable achievement. Last month, the buggy service carried its 200,000th passenger! From service that transported approximately 200 passengers in its first month, it now supports an average of 2,000 passengers every month, demonstrating its tremendous value to patients and visitors across the hospital.

This success would not have been possible without the commitment and dedication of our volunteer team, who provide a friendly, reliable, and compassionate service every day.

A special thank you goes to Keith Reeve, who leads the buggy service and is always on hand to provide guidance, support, and solutions whenever needed. His leadership and commitment have played a significant role in the service’s continued success over the past decade.

Congratulations to everyone involved in this fantastic achievement, and thank you for making such a positive difference to the hospital community. And our thanks to Anca from ISS for arranging the refreshments.

Last week, we said goodbye to Chief Nursing Officer, Prof Louise Morton, as she retired from the Trust after four years' service. Staff from across the site came to thank her and wish her the very best in her retirement following a 30 plus years' commitment to nursing.

Joining us in January 2022, Louise came with a clear leadership approach and a strong focus on nursing and quality. She played a key role in important developments across the Trust and supported teams through both planned change and more challenging periods.

Her experience and perspective were valued across the organisation, and the Trust would like to thank her for the commitment to patients and colleagues she showed during her time with us.

Speaking at the farewell event, Trust CEO Paul Fish said: "As I reflect on Louise’s career, three themes stand out: her lifelong commitment to children and young people; her passion for education and developing others; and her instinct always to improve care. In all of these, Louise’s career is a story of making things better and improving the lives of future generations.

"So, on behalf of everyone here, and everyone you have cared for, supported and led across more than thirty years: thank you. Thank you for your wisdom, your steadiness, your candour, and your focus on future generations, whether they be children and young people or learners. We will miss you enormously. Now go and enjoy every minute of what comes next.”
