Monday at Lister Hospital saw colour, joy, and celebration as staff came together to mark the vibrant Festival of Onam, a 10-day harvest festival from Kerala, India.

From traditional Indian dancing to the lighting of the Onam lamp, and the creation of a stunning Pookalam (floral Rangoli), the hospital was buzzing with festive cheer and cultural pride! 💃🪔🌺

A huge thank you to everyone who helped organise this beautiful celebration, and to East and North Hertfordshire Hospitals' Charity for making it all possible 💙

We’re incredibly proud to see our Consultant Urologist and Robotic Surgeon, Tim Lane, begin his new role as President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Tim has spent more than 20 years working with us, helping to advance pelvic oncology, support surgical education and train the next generation of surgeons.

He has also become the first President in the College’s 400-year history to be directly elected by surgical members and fellows.

Congratulations, Tim – a fantastic and well-deserved achievement! 👏

Congratulations to Midwife and DAISY Award winner Cassie Clarke!

Nominated by patients who experienced a complicated delivery at our Midwife-Led Unit, Cassie's care began the moment they arrived. She listened carefully to their birth preferences, supported them throughout labour, and when pain became overwhelming, she struck the perfect balance between honouring their choices and making sure they were truly heard. "She got the balance perfectly," one nominator reflected. "She acknowledged what we wanted but also made sure we knew all our options."

When Cassie spotted subtle warning signs, she didn't hesitate. She calmly communicated her concerns and led the family to the consultant-led unit. An emergency C-section followed, and within an hour, a healthy baby girl arrived safely.

But Cassie's care didn't end at delivery. She stayed, providing reassurance every step of the way. After the baby spent time in NICU, Cassie made time to visit and check in on the family.

"We couldn't have wished for a better person to support us through it all," one nominator wrote. "There is nothing I would have changed about how things were.

DAISY awards are sponsored by East and North Hertfordshire Hospitals Charity. You can nominate a staff member for a DAISY Award on our website: https://www.enherts-tr.nhs.uk/patient-visitors/daisy-award/

Staff in our Emergency Department successfully road tested our new static decontamination unit this week showing they’re ready for any emergency.

The CBRNe (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and explosive) drill tested the team as they safely decontaminated a patient after a chemical exposure, while keeping other patients and staff out of harm’s way.

Auditors from our ambulance partners EEAST and NHS England were impressed with how we handled the drill. Big thanks to the nephew of a member of staff who helped by role-playing the casualty. This annual exercise is just one way our teams train and prepare for all eventualities to keep our patients safe.
