Done the physio but your shoulder still hurts?

If you've been doing the exercises, waiting for it to settle and hoping things will improve, but you're still waking at night or unable to get back to the things you enjoy, it might be time to understand what's keeping you stuck.
The goal isn't to rush into injections.
The goal is to find the right treatment, at the right time, for the right person.

Even as a doctor, I overlooked this during my Achilles rehab.

Last year I developed persistent Achilles pain while running.

Looking back, I focused heavily on exercises, training load and footwear.

What I underestimated was nutrition.

Healing tissue needs energy, protein and the building blocks required for recovery.

I've written a blog explaining how nutritional priorities change through the different stages of injury recovery

“My knee hurts every day… but I’m not ready for a knee replacement “

It’s one of the commonest things I hear in clinic

Many people have already tried exercises, pain killers or even tried steroid injections, but don’t realise there may be other options worth discussing before considering surgery.

Most injuries don't happen because of one bad run, one tackle or one training session.

Pain is often the final domino to fall.

The more important question isn't:

❌ What's injured?

It's:
✅ Why did it happen?

That's usually where the real answers are.

Been told you have "hip bursitis"?

Pain on the outside of the hip is often labelled as bursitis, but that may not be the whole story.

If you struggle with:
✅ Lying on that side at night
✅ Getting out of the car
✅ Walking uphill
✅ Climbing stairs
then an accurate diagnosis can make a real difference to treatment.

Many people spend months or even years treating what they think is bursitis without ever fully understanding why their symptoms persist.

At Stirling Sports Medicine Clinic, I provide doctor-led assessment of musculoskeletal and sports injuries, helping patients understand what's really causing their pain and the best way forward.

A small calf twinge on my long run yesterday got me thinking...

Most people judge recovery by one question:
"Has my injury healed?"

As a runner, that wasn't my first thought.
My first thought was:
"Can I still do what I need my body to do?"
Can I keep training?
Can I tackle hills?
Can I manage next week's long run?
Can I make it to race day?
That's the difference between a tissue-healing model and a performance model.

Pain settling is important.
Healing is important.
But for runners, footballers, golfers and active people, the ultimate goal isn't simply healing an injury.
It's returning to the activities that matter to you.
Recovery isn't the goal. Race day is. 🏅
