I want to share more information about the wonderful psychological theory that is Transactional Analysis (TA).
The three main pillars of TA are awareness, spontaneity, and intimacy and they define autonomy.
Developed by psychiatrist Eric Berne, the ultimate goal of TA is to help individuals break free from ingrained childhood behaviour patterns (life scripts) and psychological "games" by achieving these three capacities.
1. Awareness
Awareness is the ability to see, hear, and feel reality exactly as it is in the "here and now", without filtering it through past experiences or unconscious biases.
How it works: It requires operating from the Adult ego state, enabling you to assess situations factually and make decisions based on present circumstances rather than historical reactions.
2. Spontaneity
Spontaneity means having the freedom to choose, feel, and express your authentic self. It gives you the flexibility to select from a full spectrum of feelings, thoughts, and behaviours rather than being locked into rigid scripts.
How it works: It involves tapping into your Free Child ego state (the creative, playful, and curious part of you), but balancing it with Adult problem-solving skills so you can express your needs safely and appropriately.
3. Intimacy
In TA, intimacy is the capacity to be completely open, candid, and game-free in your connection with another person. It is the authentic sharing of feelings and thoughts without hidden agendas or the need to manipulate.
How it works: It relies on both awareness and spontaneity. By being fully aware of your surroundings and having the spontaneous freedom to be yourself, you can relate to others openly and unconditionally.
By working through personal challenges, using TA and linked theories, you really can change your life for the better.
