High blood pressure (also called hypertension) can lead to serious problems like heart attacks or strokes. But lifestyle changes and blood pressure medicines can help you stay healthy. High blood pressure is very common, especially in older adults. There are usually no symptoms, so you may not realise you have it.

If your aged 40 to 74 and do not have a pre-existing health condition, you should be invited to an NHS Health Check by your GP or local council every 5 years where you will get your BP checked. You can also get your BP free at some participating pharmacies.

Today is world sepsis day. Sepsis is a serious reaction to an infection that can be life-threatening. It develops very quickly and needs urgent treatment in hospital.

Low mood and negative thoughts are something that everyone will experience from time to time. However, for some these thoughts might feel constant and overwhelming and that is when you need to reach out but sometimes it's hard to know who to talk to.

Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month

Symptoms of thyroid cancer include:
a lump in the front, lower part of your neck – the lump usually feels hard, slowly gets bigger and is not painful
a hoarse voice
a sore throat
difficulty swallowing or breathing
pain in the front of your neck, or a feeling like something is pressing against your neck

Other symptoms can include:
a red face (flushing) – this may be harder to see on brown or black skin
softer poos or diarrhoea
weight loss
a cough
If you have a thyroid condition, such as a goitre (swollen thyroid), you may get symptoms like these regularly.
You might find you get used to them. But it's important to be checked by a GP if your symptoms change, get worse, or do not feel normal for you.

See a GP if:
you have a lump in your neck – either a new lump or an existing lump that's getting bigger
you've had a hoarse voice, sore throat or cough for more than 3 weeks
you have pain in the front of your neck, or a feeling like something is pressing against your neck
