Ian Cookson - Sport Psychology

Ian Cookson - Sport Psychology I also hold a doctorate in psychology from MMU. Get in touch for more info. In brief a psychologist helps us understand human behaviour.

I am a sport and exercise psychologist in training (SEPiT) with CASES working with athletes and sporting teams on issues like motivation, confidence, values and communication! I am a sport and exercise psychologist in training (SEPiT) on the BASES pathway, working under the supervision of an accredited sport and exercise psychologist. In a sporting context that might mean issues such as anxiety, m

otivation, stress, and confidence related to performance. Additionally from a team perspective we might look at values, cohesiveness and role clarity. As a sport psychologist I can work with you to develop an understanding of how psychology can improve performance, and develop skills and techniques to develop your ability to thrive in competition. As a practitioner your confidentiality is imperative and I follow the BASES code of conduct. I have an enhanced DBS check, and have undertaken safeguarding training in order to ensure I am operating to the highest ethical standards.

Bingeing Ted Lasso and I love it mainly because there’s an everyday understanding of psychology in much of what he does. What is frustrating is the portrayal of the sport psychologist, looking very much like a stereotypical psychiatrist, including a couch. We do offer 1-1 sessions and often in private settings but we also work in a range of settings including on the pitch and in classrooms. Don’t be fooled by television portrayals of our work!

An amazing couple of days in Ireland with supporting the staff and players over two games against the Irish national team. A tough 1-1 draw following a day off travel and hot conditions, and then a 5-0 win. Some strong performances as a group.

Due to new work coming in I will only be available for online consultations for 1-1 clients. Unfortunately I will not be able to travel to meet clients for the foreseeable future but please do get in touch if an online consultation meets your needs. As always a free exploratory phone call would be our first step in determining the way forward.

Want to know how Roger Federer relates to resilience? Or how we build team cultures that show a significant improvement in performance?

I've got capacity to run a couple of workshops for local teams (Stockport and surrounding areas) before the end of August. £75 per 1 hour session, and can include games and activities for younger teams.

You'll likely see a lot of posts about the psychological processes behind success/failure with teams at the world cup at the moment. While we can infer what the team might be working on from their media comments i.e. Thomas Tuchel after the Croatia game said "We were too focused on protecting the result...If the result doesn't go our way, we want to play our way. I tried to encourage them to go for it." which suggests an emphasis on an approach focused rather than an avoidant mindset, there's a an important caveat. Without having conducted a needs analysis with the team speculation is both unethical and incomplete, lacking objectivity and may misinform the public.

Such an enjoyable experience!
