Friendly Fridays

Sarah has been attending Friendly Fridays over several months now.

She was delighted to be asked to come along to talk with some of the regular attendees about planning ahead, including discussions around end-of-life and funeral care - all within a more relaxed and informal setting.

It's not always easy to have these types of conversations, particularly with your loved ones, when there is so much emotion and love involved.

We were delighted to hear from Anna, a member of the Leadership Team at Friendly Fridays, who shared the following:
“I was pleased during our debrief session this evening to learn that there was a discussion about death and funerals at one of the tables. Your name (Sarah) came up, and participants were sharing their bereavement stories. It was easier for them to continue the conversation by reflecting on your (Sarah’s) visit, what we have all learned, the importance of discussing these topics, and our shared goal to break the taboo surrounding them.”

Friendly Fridays is a multi-generational community drop in that takes place every Friday, 10am - 2pm at the Rose Walker Community Centre, SK3 0JA. Everything is FREE, entrance, drinks, snacks, lunch and activities. They welcome all ages and all abilities.

❓Did you know...❓

You can place items in the coffin with your loved one. Many families find great comfort in leaving special items and gifts for their loved ones.

You might consider including a heartfelt letter, a card, or cherished photographs and drawings. Some families have added favourite tea bags, soft toys from grandchildren, precious jewellery, a handkerchief held in their hand, or even their beloved chocolates and sweets. 💌

These mementos and keepsakes can hold significant meaning and happy memories.

There may be specific customs or cultural and religious reasons for including certain items, and we will always work with families to accommodate these wishes.
Deciding what to include in your loved one's coffin is a deeply personal choice. We want the families we serve to feel at ease when including items that are meaningful to them and that honour the life of the deceased.

If you prefer not to place the items yourself, we can assist by placing them in the Coffin for you.

*Please note that some restrictions apply, particularly for Cremations, so always consult with your Funeral Director before leaving any items in the Coffin.

🤝Working Together; Stockport Registrars

Building strong and collaborative relationships with our partners in the funeral and bereavement industry is extremely important to us.

We were excited to receive an invitation from Rachel and Sharon at Stockport Registrars to share insights and experiences with their team. Ryan, our Acting Head of Business, visited the registry office, where he enjoyed a guided tour of the stunning Town Hall facilities before presenting to the team.

Sharing in this way helps to strengthen and enhance our ability to support bereaved families in Stockport with confidence and compassion.

A few weeks later, we were pleased to reciprocate the invitation by welcoming Rachel and Leanne to our Funeral Home in Cheadle.

By working closely together, we can make a meaningful difference.

📜Our History - Week 22

Over the last few months we have really enjoyed sharing the long and rich history of Jonathan Alcock and Sons with you.

As we move into the present day, 2026 has already proven to be another fulfilling year (and we're only half way through!) as we help bereaved families honour their loved ones in the most meaningful ways.

This year, we proudly joined SAIF (The National Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors) after successfully passing an inspection as part of our accreditation process. We were thrilled to achieve this milestone with flying colours, securing our membership to SAIF. As professional Funeral Directors, we take pride in being members of both SAIF and the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD).

Our plans to redevelop Taylors Yard are progressing, albeit more slowly than we would like! However, we recently ‘passed’ the bat survey, which allows us to move on to the next and final steps before obtaining planning permission.

We have added a Memorial Postbox to the grounds of our Funeral Home, where bereaved children and families can send letters to their lost loved one’s.

Engaging with, and supporting our local communities remains really important to us. We are delighted to be involved with the Cheadle Civic Society’s latest project, the Cheadle Community Heritage Trai,l and are now proudly displaying our own Infomation Board in the grounds of our Funeral Home in Cheadle as part of the trail.

Earlier this year, we held our fourth charity flower arranging evening and were delighted to present a cheque for £350.00 to Together Trust.

We are excited to see what the rest of 2026 brings.

As we continue to grow and evolve, we remain dedicated too serving with compassion and integrity. We are grateful for the trust and support of our community and look forward to many more years of serving you with the same commitment and care that have been hallmarks of Jonathan Alcock and Sons for over 160 years.

💐Floral Tributes - Bouquets

In recent weeks, we have been delving deeper into the significance of Floral Tributes (funeral flowers) and their meanings. These floral arrangements offer a beautiful and heartfelt way to honour your loved one’s memory.

Ranging from elegant wreaths to vibrant bouquets, these tributes are designed to provide comfort, reflect your loved one’s memory, and convey sincere condolences.

We will explore various styles and themes, including traditional arrangements featuring lilies and roses, as well as more personalised designs that highlight favourite blooms or colours.

Join us as we uncover how these tributes can convey messages of love, peace, and remembrance.

This week, we shine a spotlight on Hand-Tied Bouquets. These simple yet elegant floral tributes can be either flat-backed or wrapped in paper and presented in a gift box. They are a popular and respectful choice for mourners to send to the grieving family.

Popular flowers to include in a floral tribute are;
-Lilies - symbolising a return to innocence and peace
-Roses - red for grief and sorrow; pink for grace and gratitude; and yellow for friendship
-Carnations - these are long-lasting flowers, with white representing pure love and pink signifying remembrance
-Chrysanthemums - widely recognised as a symbol of grief, embodying trust, friendship and loyalty. Often refered to as ‘mums’, they frequently appear in funeral tributes for mothers.

📜Our History - Week 21

Over the last many months, we have been sharing the long and rich history of Jonathan Alcock and Sons, and now as we come to the final few installments of 'Our History' series, this week we take a look back on last year.

2025 was quite a year for change and growth for our family firm, with special anniversaries, new team members, and promotions within the team, as well as the addition of a Private Ambulance to our funeral fleet.

After just shy of 20 years dedicated service, Ryan stepped into the role of Acting Head of Business. Ryan’s dedication and commitment have been instrumental to the company’s success and continued legacy.

Our Private Ambulance is designed with specialised features and functionality to ensure a discreet, safe, and comfortable transfer of your loved ones into our care.

We also celebrated several significant anniversaries - a 20th, 21st and 40th! We are very proud of the long-service of our team members, and each celebration was an opportunity to recognise their contributions.

Additionally, we were delighted to hold our first Summer Memorial Service with St Mary’s Parish Church. It was a beautiful sunny afternoon of rememberance, where joy and sorrow gently co-existed.

Next week marks the final installment of our ‘Our History’ series, as we turn our focus to the present day.
