There are moments in life when you stop, take a breath, and realise just how far you’ve come.
For me, one of those moments is standing outside my own funeral home, looking up and seeing my name above the door. It still means more to me than I can put into words.
Before every funeral, there are rituals I follow. I put on my top hat, take my cane in my hand, and prepare myself for the responsibility that lies ahead. These things might seem small to some, but to me they are reminders of the profession I have dedicated almost two decades of my life to.
Almost 20 years of learning, training, experience, mistakes, growth and dedication have brought me here.
I found my calling in my mid-twenties, when I made the decision to change careers and follow a path that felt, somehow, like it had always been meant for me. It wasn't necessarily the easiest decision, but there were people around me who believed in me and knew that this was where I belonged.
And I will forever be grateful for them.
Being an undertaker isn't simply about arranging and conducting funerals. It is about being there when someone's world has fallen apart. It is about listening, guiding, reassuring, taking away some of the burden and helping families navigate one of the most difficult moments of their lives.
It is an enormous privilege, but it is also an enormous responsibility. Every family, every person and every goodbye matters. I never forget that.
I wouldn't be able to give my heart and soul to this work without my own family and my closest friends. Their love, patience, encouragement and belief in me have carried me through the difficult days and helped me become the person and funeral director I am today.
And then there are the families in our local communities who place their trust in me.
The people who pick up the phone.
The people who walk through my door.
The people who trust me to look after someone they love.
Thank you.
Thank you for allowing me to be part of such important moments in your lives. Thank you for trusting me with your loved ones. And thank you for allowing me to do the work I feel I was meant to do.
I am incredibly proud of what stands above that door.
But even more than the name, I am proud of what it represents — nearly two decades of dedication, the people who believed in me, the families who have trusted me, and a calling that I feel truly blessed to have found.
I don't take any of it for granted.
Thank you. From the bottom of my heart. ❤️
