One of our jobs from this week, Removing a dying fir tree along with one of four Lawson cypress. giving the remaining 3 more space to grow and thrive.

The result is a brighter, more open garden with less overcrowding, healthier trees, and improved long-term structure.

🌲 Reducing the Height Before the Final Fell 🌲

Today’s job involved reducing the height of these large Douglas firs to allow them to be safely felled into the woodland, well away from the nearby buildings.

By lowering the trees in stages, we can create a much safer working environment, giving us the space and control needed to complete the final felling without risking damage to surrounding property.

Every site is different, and planning the safest method is always our priority. carrying out the work efficiently while protecting people, buildings and the surrounding environment.

Exactly one year ago, we were called to this mature willow after it suffered significant storm damage. High winds had caused major limb failure, with large branches splitting from the main stem and leaving the tree structurally unsafe.

Rather than removing the tree, we carried out a pollard. This reduced the weight on the weakened structure, removed the damaged limbs, and made the tree safe while giving it the best possible chance to recover.

Fast forward 12 months, and the results speak for themselves. The willow has responded with vigorous, healthy new growth and is well on its way to forming a balanced new crown. This is a great example of how the right management at the right time can preserve a valued tree while significantly reducing the risk it poses.

Every tree is different, and while pollarding isn’t suitable in every situation, it can be an excellent solution for certain species—particularly willows—when carried out correctly and at the appropriate time.

This mature maple had developed significant structural defects, including decay and a weakened main union. It was also showing signs of dieback, with dead limbs beginning to fall, creating a risk to the public using the nearby footpaths and gardens.

Following an assessment, we carried out an emergency pollard as the first phase of a planned management programme. This significantly reduced the risk of branch or stem failure while allowing the client to spread the cost of the work over time, with the tree scheduled for removal at a later date.

Safety is always our priority, and where possible we work with our clients to find practical, cost-effective solutions that manage risk without compromising on professional standards.

We removed this old dead tree, which was full of hidden metal fencing and old gate hinges , making the job far more challenging than expected. With the tree removed, the entrance is already looking more open, and the home owners are one step closer to creating a smarter, more welcoming entrance to the property.

🌲 Bridge End Cat Hotel 🐾

We’ve been busy removing softwood trees growing close to the cat hotel, helping to protect the building from the risk of falling trees and branches.

The hardwood trees have been carefully retained, leaving the area safer, more open and with a better balance of trees for the future. 🌳

A hot one today! ☀️🌳

We’re thinning this overcrowded group of trees by removing selected larger sycamore and willow trees. This creates more space, light, and growing room for the remaining trees, helping to improve the overall health and structure of the woodland for years to come.

Despite the scorching weather, we’re keeping the work moving safely while making sure every tree left behind has the best chance to thrive.

D Ballantyne Tree Services – professional tree surgery and woodland management carried out with care, whatever the weather.

🌳 One of our jobs this week at Apperley Road, Stocksfield.

We carried out the removal of several trees from this entrance to create a more open and brighter space. The work has allowed more natural light into the area, improved visibility and access, and given the entrance a much tidier appearance.

A simple change that has made a big difference, leaving the property looking more welcoming and well maintained.

🌲 Saturday’s Job Complete 🌲

A nice little job for a Saturday, removing this Nordmann fir which was originally planted as a potted Christmas tree many years ago. Over time it had continued to thrive and had eventually outgrown the space available, becoming too large for its surroundings.

The tree was dismantled and removed, leaving the area with more space, light, and room for the surrounding garden to flourish.

If you have a tree that’s becoming too large for its location, get in touch with D Ballantyne Tree Services for professional advice and a free quotation.
