Congratulations to Miranda Maharaj who recently presented at the Annual Orthopaedic Conference.

Miranda, a foundation year two medical trainee from the trauma and orthopaedic service at the University Hospital of North Tees, showcased her work on improving care for elderly patients with hip fractures.

She presented an audit – ‘reducing delays in hip fracture patients on direct oral anticoagulants’.

Anticoagulants are medicines that help prevent blood clots - given to people at a high risk of getting clots and reducing chances of developing serious conditions such as strokes and heart attacks.

The audit looked at factors contributing to delays in surgery for patients receiving these medications and highlighted measures that can help improve patient pathways and improve access to treatment – meaning improved outcomes for patients.

The project reflects the continued commitment of the service to enhancing patient care through quality improvement, audit, and evidence-based practice.

By identifying opportunities to reduce delays, the work supports ongoing efforts to optimise outcomes for elderly patients and maintain high standards of care.

Presenting at a national conference provided an opportunity to share achievements with colleagues from across the country, whilst contributing to wider discussions on improving orthopaedic care.

Dr Maharaj said: "It was a privilege to represent the University Hospital of North Tees at the conference and present work that highlights the dedication of our trauma and orthopaedic team to improving patient care in the region.

“Hip fracture patients are often among the most vulnerable individuals we treat, and it was rewarding to showcase initiatives aimed at improving their journey through hospital and supporting better outcomes.

“The presentation demonstrates our ongoing commitment to research, audit, and quality improvement, ensuring that patients continue to benefit from innovative and evidence-based approaches to care.

“The achievement also highlights the valuable opportunities available to resident doctors at to get involved in research and quality improvement projects, helping both professional development and patient care."

Gastroenterologists from University Hospitals Tees were pleased to welcome an internationally renowned expert to a specialist endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) workshop - supporting the continuous improvement of hepato-pancreatico biliary services in the region.

Hosted by the hepato-pancreatico biliary (HPB) team, the workshop welcomed Professor Hassan Okasha, professor of internal medicine and hepato-gastroenterology, from Kasr Al-Aini Hospitals in Cairo to present at the endoscopy department within the University Hospital of North Tees.

The workshop brought together HPB consultants and trainees with an interest in endoscopic ultrasound from across University Hospitals Tees and neighbouring NHS trusts throughout the North East. The event provided a valuable opportunity for learning, collaboration and the sharing of best practice to ensure clinicians remain at the forefront of patient care.

Pupils at St Gregory’s Catholic Academy, Stockton-on-Tees have made a donation to our North Tees chemo unit after being inspired by the experiences of a classmate whose mum is undergoing treatment for breast cancer. đŸ„°

11-year-old Luca and Jude (pictured here) and their classmates raised £717 at their Year 6 ‘enterprise day’ this month. After using some of their earnings to fund end-of-year activities (including a cinema trip to see Toy Story 5), the class decided that they also wanted to donate to the unit – where Jude’s mam, Lisa, has recently received care.

When asked why he and the class wanted to unit, Jude said: “I don’t want anyone to end up in the situation that my mam was and I don’t want it to be stressful for anyone.” đŸ„č❀

Our physiotherapy teams recently helped over 250 patients with routine, chronic and ongoing musculoskeletal issues, access faster care and treatment in their local community.

The integrated musculoskeletal (iMSK) team held their first community appointment day (CAD) at Brierton Community Sports and Leisure Centre in Hartlepool on Wednesday 29 July.

The one-stop-shop initiative connected patients directly with:

✅one-to-one holistic assessments to address health needs in a single appointment
✅support services aimed at removing barriers to care and improving wellbeing ✅education and rehabilitation taster sessions

This is the first initiative of its kind in the region, helping to connect patients with the right services at the right time, reduce waiting times and access care within their local community.

Diane Matthews, iMSK team lead at North Tees and Hartlepool said:

“Going forward, we will use the insights gained from this event to shape future community appointment days and expand our reach across the wider community, ensuring more patients can benefit from timely, accessible care closer to home.”

“Abbi will be resting with the ‘angels’, as she was probably one of them who came to earth and whom I was fortunate to meet.”

Abbi Hewitson, from Hartlepool, sadly passed away in December 2025 at the age of 31, surrounded by her family, following a long battle with a low-grade glioma.

She had been diagnosed at The James Cook University Hospital in 2019. Despite her condition, Abbi never allowed her condition to define her and went on to raise thousands of pounds for the teams at James Cook who cared for her throughout her treatment.

Over the years, Abbi, alongside her family and friends, raised funds for the hospital unit through a range of fundraising activities, including virtual lemonade stands, sponsored swims and participation in the Great North Run. Their efforts raised more than £8,000 for the unit, despite Abbi’s deteriorating condition.

Following Abbi’s passing, her mum Nicola wanted to continue her daughter’s fundraising efforts for different hospital teams at University Hospitals Tees and honour the incredible legacy she left behind.

As a result, Nicola, who works as a specialist therapy assistant in the paediatric physiotherapy unit at the University Hospital of Hartlepool, decided to donate special toys for children undergoing treatment in the same department.

The donation has been made in memory of Abbi and as a thank you to the teams who cared for her over the years.

Many children who attend the hospital for treatment can find the environment daunting. Thanks to the generous donation from Nicola and her family, young patients attending the unit will now have toys to help them feel more relaxed and comfortable during their visits.
