There’s no excuse for abuse ❌⚽

Not football. Not alcohol. Not winning or losing.

As the World Cup continues, we're here to challenge the excuses often used to minimise domestic abuse during major sporting events.

Football doesn’t cause abuse. Abuse is always a choice.

For some people, the tournament can mean walking on eggshells, changing routines, or feeling anxious about what might happen at home. If that's you, please know you're not alone. Support is available.

And if you're worried about your own behaviour, it's never too late to make a change. Taking responsibility and seeking support is a sign of strength.

Throughout the tournament, we'll be sharing advice, information and ways to access help, because together we can become united in ending abuse.

If you're worried about yourself or someone you know, don't cross the line in silence. Reach out. We're on your side.

Football should never be an excuse for abuse. We’re reminding people that help is always there if home does not feel safe, and that support is available when it’s needed most πŸ’œ

While football does not cause domestic abuse, existing abuse can intensify around tournaments. Research shows that cases of domestic abuse increase by 38% when England lose a match and 26% when they win or draw.

Across and Stoke-on-Trent, we are working with partners including councils, police, health services and specialist Domestic Abuse Services.

If you or someone you know is at risk, please reach out.

In an emergency, always call 999.

For confidential support, you can contact:
πŸ“ž New Era Domestic Abuse Service for Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent on 0330 303 3778
πŸ“ž Glow on 0330 094 5559
πŸ“ž The Pathway Project on 01543 676 800
πŸ“ž Staffordshire Women's Aid on 0300 330 5959

Support is also available if you’re worried about your own behaviour and want to make a change. Contact the New Era Behaviour Change Service on 0300 373 5772 or email [email protected].
