One question I get asked a lot in clinic is "do collagen supplements really work?"

The short answer is yes, collagen supplements can help but not in the way many marketing campaigns suggest.

Collagen supplements are not a miracle. They're a supporting player, not the star of the show.

What does the science say?

Several studies have shown that taking hydrolysed collagen peptides consistently for around 8–12 weeks or longer may lead to modest improvements in:

Skin hydration
Elasticity
Fine lines
Skin density
Overall skin appearance

The evidence is encouraging, particularly for women experiencing age-related or menopausal collagen decline. However, the improvements tend to be subtle rather than dramatic, and results vary from person to person.

Not all collagen supplements are the same so here's what to look out for when choosing:

Hydrolysed collagen peptides
Type I and III collagen for skin support
A clinically studied formulation where possible

What gives better results than collagen supplements alone?

For improving skin quality after menopause, the strongest evidence supports a combination approach:

☑️ Medical-grade skincare - we love Nimue 🫶
☑️ Daily broad-spectrum SPF - Nimue SunC SPF 40 is our absolute fave 🌞
☑️Collagen-stimulating treatments where appropriate - Radio-frequency and/or Dermapen Micro-needling are our "go to" collagen induction treatments
☑️A protein-rich, nutrient-dense diet.
☑️Good sleep and exercise habits.
☑️Optional collagen supplementation - personally, I take Collagen Boozt from Zinzino as it ticks all the boxes. We stock this in clinic so if you'd like to know more, ask on your next visit.

So, to answer the question; "Do collagen supplements really work?"

Collagen supplements may support skin health, but they aren't a substitute for a comprehensive approach. Healthy, resilient skin is built through skincare, treatments, nutrition, lifestyle and consistency—not one product alone.

At Skin Sanctuary, we believe healthy, radiant skin isn't achieved through one miracle product. It's built through understanding your skin, making informed choices, and following a personalised plan that evolves with you.

If you're navigating the changes that come with peri-menopause or menopause and aren't sure where to start, we'd love to help. Book your Skin Consultation and discover what your skin truly needs to thrive. 🥰

If you've been following our menopause skin series and want to know more about treatments, this video gives details on 3 of our most popular for maintaining skin health because beautiful skin isn't defined by age - it's defined by quality.

Let's create a personalised menopause skin plan. After eight weeks you'll start to notice the changes.

No two women experience menopause in exactly the same way. Which means no two skin journeys are identical either.

That's why we don't believe in one-size-fits-all skincare.

Our consultations are designed to understand:

✔ your skin

✔ your hormones

✔ your concerns

✔ your goals

before recommending a personalised treatment and skincare plan.

At Skin Sanctuary, we take a personalised, evidence-led approach to skin health, helping you understand why your skin is changing and how to support it with treatments and skincare tailored to this stage of life.

Why does skin become "crepey" as we approach the menopause?

Collagen declines - Collagen is the skin's scaffolding. Less collagen means less support. The skin becomes thinner and less resilient.

Elastin decreases - Elastin allows skin to bounce back. As elastin reduces, the skin begins to fold rather than spring back.

Hyaluronic acid falls - The skin loses its ability to retain water resulting in TEWL (Trans-epidermal Water Loss). Even well-moisturised skin can still appear dehydrated because it's struggling to hold onto moisture.

Skin becomes thinner - Cell turnover slows. The dermis gradually becomes thinner.
This makes the skin appear more delicate.

Sun damage catches up - Years of UV exposure begin to show. Even women who have worn SPF consistently can notice cumulative changes.

Menopause often accelerates what was already happening beneath the surface.

Can crepey skin improve?

Yes—but it requires a combination of approaches.

Our personalised skin treatment plan will include:

Prescriptive, professional only skincare to support the skin barrier and hydration.
Ingredients that encourage collagen production (such as retinaldehyde, peptides and antioxidants, where appropriate)

Treatments that stimulate collagen and elastin production such as Radio Frequency, Micro-current, Micro-needling, IPL Skin Rejuvenation.

Sun protection to reduce further collagen breakdown, good nutrition and lifestyle habits that support skin health.

The goal is to improve skin quality, making the skin feel stronger, smoother and more resilient.

Beautiful skin isn't defined by age—it's defined by quality.

If you've noticed your skin becoming thinner, drier or less resilient, it may be time to rethink your skincare strategy.

At Skin Sanctuary, we take a personalised, evidence-led approach to skin health, helping you understand why your skin is changing and how to support it with treatments and skincare tailored to this stage of life. Is the menopause making you feel like you have lost control of your body?At this stage in your life, the hormonal shifts...
11/07/2026

Is the menopause making you feel like you have lost control of your body?
At this stage in your life, the hormonal shifts affect far more than just your menstrual cycle. They are responsible for many of the skin concerns, body changes and symptoms women experience during peri-menopause and menopause.

Oestrogen

The biggest hormonal change comes from a rapid decline in Oestrogen. This results in a collagen loss of up to 30% in the first 5 years after menopause.

Your skin becomes more fragile with increasing dryness and dehydration.

Fine lines and wrinkles start to appear and there is a reduction in elasticity and sagging with slower wound healing.

Progesterone

Progesterone often begins to decline before Oestrogen. This can lead to poor sleep, anxiety or irritability, breast tenderness and irregular or heavier periods.

Testosterone

Although women produce much less testosterone than men, it plays an important role in maintaining muscle, energy and libido.

Cortisol

Whilst menopause doesn't necessarily directly increase cortisol, stress and poor sleep can lead to higher cortisol levels.

This can lead to weight gain around the middle, increased inflammation (which can show up in the skin), general skin ageing, acne flare ups, sugar cravings.

Androgens

An increase in androgens can lead to chin or upper lip hair, oily skin, adult acne, hair thinning on the scalp.

Why hormones matter for skin health:

Hormones regulate collagen product, hydration pigmentation, healing and inflammation.

The good news is that these changes can often be managed with the right skincare, professional treatments, nutrition and lifestyle changes. But who do you trust with your skin?

You don't want to waste money on more skincare products or professional treatments that aren't going to get results. What you want is expert guidance rather than trial and error and listening to influencers who are flooding social media.

When you visit Skin Sanctuary, you are buying confidence, glow, skin resilience, hydration. You will look "rested" - so that your friends will be saying, "you look amazing." You are buying into an award winning luxury skin clinic using the world's most trusted brands for treatment efficacy.

If you want natural results and to be the best version of you, get in touch. We can't wait to help you on your journey to glowing, healthy skin.
