​Most people think earwax is just waste that needs to be cleaned out immediately. But the truth is, your body makes it for a really important reason!

​Think of earwax as your ears' personal, built-in security guard. 🕵️‍♂️✨

​What is it made of?
It's a mix of dead skin cells, hair, and secretions from special glands in your outer ear canal.
​What does it actually do?

​It’s a shield: It traps dust, dirt, and bacteria before they can travel deeper into your ear.
​It’s a moisturizer: It keeps your ear canals from getting dry, itchy, and irritated.

​It’s a self-cleaner: Your ears naturally move old wax outward when you chew or talk.

🏖️ Heading Away This Summer? Check Your Ears First!
With the summer holidays here, more of us are swimming, snorkelling, and jumping into pools, lakes, and the sea — and unfortunately, that means a spike in ear problems too.
One issue I've seen more of recently: water getting trapped behind a build-up of earwax.
Here's what happens — if you already have wax sitting in your ear canal, water from swimming can seep in behind it and become trapped. This creates the perfect warm, moist environment for bacteria to thrive, often leading to painful ear infections (sometimes known as "swimmer's ear"). What starts as a relaxing dip can end up as days of discomfort, blocked hearing, or even a trip to the GP for antibiotics.
Signs to watch for:
🔸 Ears feeling blocked or "underwater" even once you're dry
🔸 Itching or discomfort in the ear canal
🔸 Pain, especially when touching or moving the ear
🔸 Discharge or an unpleasant smell
🔸 Reduced hearing on one or both sides
