The simplest way to support children with their feelings is to label them in action.

When your child display a particular feeling, play detective using words such as “you seem upset, angry etc” This enables your child to get used to feelings words and acknowledge situations when these feelings may occur.

The Inside Out films are a great starting point to show the different feelings your child may experience. (Be mindful that these films use American terminology so you may want to highlight the appropriate British term.

Within our My Feelings and Me programme, children are asked to label examples of feelings to embed this very important part of their mental health education.

What happens when our feelings are left unsupported? As shown in the images, they escalate,

This is an extreme example, but hopefully highlights the importance of supporting children to identify their feelings.

My Feelings and Me achieves this and provides children with a platform to acknowledge their feelings and not be afraid of them. As after all, all feelings are ok.

We’ve recently had mental health awareness week. This brings with it lots of discussion around mental health, which we welcome.

However, we need real change. Mental health education needs to be a part of the national curriculum.

We have seen first hand with My Feelings and Me, the direct impact this has had on children.

While this is not on the national curriculum we need the support of our local communities to enable us to offer this vital education.

Simple ways to support us by sharing this post, online shopping through easy fundraisings or contact us for sponsorship opportunities.

By coming together we can make a difference for future generations.

Following on from this week’s posts, we wanted to highlight that rest is important during half term. In fact, we encourage you to have a stay at home day. This will support children (and you) to recharge and prepare for all the excitement that the next couple of months bring.

Simple ways to support an overwhelmed child after school:

Listen to what your child is trying to tell you.
Avoid fixing.
Validate how they feel.
If your child likes movement provide opportunities for this eg, trip to the park, kicking football outside once home etc.
If your child calms down watching TV allow this time.
Some children may need time alone.

Remember that children are no different to adults. We all need to decompress after a busy day and we all do this differently.

You may have noticed a change in child’s behaviour recently. There are some simply explanations for this.

• Sats took place last week. Even if your child did not sit them, school may have felt very different.
• Half term is approaching. While this may be exciting for some the change of routine may be difficult for others.
• Next term is summer term. Children may start to feel tired from the school year or apprehensive about going up a year in September.

These are the steps we would advise if you are not happy with the service your child is receiving:

1) In the first instance speak to the allocated worker. If unresolved then escalate to team lead.

2) If your points are still not listened then follow the complaints procedure on your local NHS trust website.

3) Be mindful that therapist is not a protected tittle. When a worker is allocated or chosen check their qualifications and or registration.

4) Finally remember our advice from yesterday’s reel, you can always request to change.
