✨Casework ✨

One of our most widely used services at EPE is the casework we undertake for school and parent/carer referrals. Our casework typically involves completing consultations with staff, observations in the setting and individual work with the child or young person. This work is then fed back to the parents/carers and relevant school staff, before being consolidated in a report.

Here, you can see some examples of various assessment tools we use during our casework. This work can be used for a range of purposes including as support for Annual Reviews of EHCPs or to support referrals to outside agencies (e.g. CAMHS).

We can complete the following assessments:

🧠Cognition and Learning Assessments (including standardised cognitive and attainment assessment, dynamic assessments and play-based assessments)
💛SEMH Assessments
🧎Movement Assessments
🦋Communication and Interaction Assessments
🤝We also offer consultation-based work to our schools following a Joint Problem Solving (JPS) approach, where appropriate

Today, we’re pleased to introduce some of our amazing Associate Educational Psychologists at EPE. Their role involves working with young people, families, schools and other professionals to assess needs, provide guidance, and help remove barriers to learning, development and emotional wellbeing.

Dr Jane Yeomans is an experienced Educational Psychologist who works as an Associate for EPE. After qualifying as a teacher in the late 1970s, she worked in a number of Primary, Nursery and Special Schools in Birmingham. Jane trained as an Educational Psychologist in 1992-3 at the University of Birmingham, and has worked for over 20 years in several Local Authority services in the West Midlands. She was awarded her PhD in 1998, for research into reading with nursery aged children. Jane retired from full time Local Authority work in 2011 but continues to do Associate work for part of her week. As well as delivering generic Educational Psychology services, Jane has a particular interest in Dynamic Assessment (DA), an interactive method of assessment that examines the processes of learning (sometimes called thinking skills).

Dr Amy Sweet is an experienced EP. She works as an Associate EP for EPE covering a school in Worcestershire. She completed her doctoral training in 2011 and has worked for both Wolverhampton and Warwickshire LAs before setting up in independent practice and joining the EPE team as an Associate EP in September 2017. ✨ Introduction time ✨

Today we would like to introduce Dr Louise Carr, our Senior Specialist Educational Psychologist for Autism Spectrum Conditions and Emotional Literacy Support Assistants (ELSA) Lead at EPE.

While having a wealth of experience of all kinds of special educational needs and barriers to learning and inclusion, Louise is particularly passionate about inclusion and support for Autistic learners and how schools, and families, can be best helped to understand, support and celebrate neurodivergence. Prior to her EP training, Louise worked for several years in a residential school for learners with complex Autism and significant learning and emotional wellbeing needs, both as a care worker and a member of the school's psychology team. This gave her invaluable experience in understanding the challenges facing Autistic learners in their home, school and community environments. At Telford & Wrekin LA, where she worked for 10 years in total as a trainee EP and then as a qualified EP, Louise contributed to the authority's Strategic Working Group on Autism and delivered DfE-backed Autism Education Trust training to educational staff in schools and settings across the borough.

At EPE, Louise leads our Specialist Autism Offer working group, focusing on developing Autism-specific services which will benefit schools/settings. Louise currently or has previously supervised both Assistant EPs and qualified EP colleagues and is also an experienced supervisor of EP doctoral trainees at all three stages of training.

Away from work, music plays a huge role in Louise's life - she is a member of a ladies choir, and regularly enjoys going to live concerts and shows, particularly orchestral music from both the traditional classical and film music genres. Louise holds National Trust membership and enjoys scrambling around castles and other historic buildings. Louise also strives to increase her physical fitness and wellbeing, through her gym membership and her enjoyment of countryside walks with a local walking group. Her biggest challenges to date have been completing the 2019 and 2021 Great North Run half-marathons. One day, she might attempt it for a third time…!

✨ Introduction time ✨

Over the next few weeks, we will be introducing members of the Educational Psychology for Everyone (EPE) team and providing an opportunity for you to get to know them better.

We would like to start by introducing Dr Emily Crichton, our Managing Director and Principal Educational Psychologist at EPE.

In January 2015 Emily launched EPE, working on her own with a small patch of schools. As the Service grew, she recruited staff and now heads a multi-agency team of more than 20 professionals including other Educational Psychologists, Assistant Educational Psychologists, Graduate Psychologists and allied education, health and care professionals and therapists. She is a trained supervisor and offers supervision to staff in the service as well as staff in schools and Emotional Literacy Support Assistants (ELSAs). This is an area of her practice that she is considering developing and extending further in future.

As Principal Educational Psychologist and Managing Director Emily provides strategic leadership and management support, enabling EPE to deliver a range of psychological services to support children and young people. Emily works with families, schools, and other professionals, assessing needs, providing advice, and developing strategies that remove barriers to learning, development, and emotional wellbeing.

Outside of the day job, which she loves, she enjoys going to the gym, playing netball and running, and has recently completed the London Marathon. She also likes spending time in the outdoors, walking with her husband and rescue dogs, travelling whenever possible, and reading in quiet times. She is a passionate Wolves fan, and is hoping for brighter things from them next season!

We can’t wait to introduce you to the other wonderful members of team EPE.
