It is with great sadness that we announce the resignation of our Chair of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Paul Simmonds, due to ill health.

Paul has been an exceptional leader, colleague, and supporter of the hospice. He joined The Shakespeare Hospice as a Trustee and member of the Finance and Audit Committee in February 2019, bringing with him a wealth of experience, sound judgement, and unwavering commitment. In October 2021, he became Chair of the Board of Trustees, a role he has fulfilled with dedication and distinction.

Paul's leadership has been instrumental in helping to shape and strengthen the organisation during a critical period. Following the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, he played a key role in establishing and embedding the stable governance structure that continues to support our work today.

Throughout his time with the hospice, Paul has been known for his fairness, pragmatism and integrity. He consistently ensured that decisions were made in the best interests of both the population we serve and the organisation itself.

His thoughtful approach, calm leadership and commitment to good governance have earned the respect and admiration of trustees, colleagues, volunteers, and stakeholders alike.

While we are deeply saddened by his resignation, we fully understand and support his decision to prioritise his health and wellbeing.

On behalf of the Board, our colleagues and everyone associated with the hospice, we extend our heartfelt thanks for his outstanding contribution and leadership.

A Message from Paul - ‘It's been a privilege to have been a trustee of The Shakespeare Hospice and even more so to have been chair. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with my fellow trustees (past and present), staff and volunteers including the tireless Friends, and of course Tracey and the Senior Management Team. The Hospice is a very special place, and I know it'll continue to provide wonderful care because it and everyone involved with it is outstanding!’

Interim Arrangements - To ensure continuity of leadership and governance, Ross Taylor, currently a Trustee of The Shakespeare Hospice, and vice chair has agreed to act as Interim Chair of the Board of Trustees with immediate effect.

The Board will now undertake a formal process to appoint a permanent Chair. Subject to Board approval, it is anticipated that an announcement regarding the substantive appointment will be made by the end of September 2026.

The Board would like to thank Ross for stepping into this role and providing stability and support during this transition period.

As we look ahead, we do so with confidence in the strong governance foundations that Paul helped establish. We wish him every success in his recovery and thank him for the lasting impact he has made on the hospice. His contribution, leadership and dedication will be remembered for many years to come.

Thank you, Paul, for your commitment, wisdom, and service. You will be greatly missed.
