Gardners Opticians, which has been trading in the city for over 50 years, has opened a new store in Blandford Street.

Taking on the entire 1,900 sq ft building, the move has provided the business with the space required to increase its product range and invest in new technology. Moving from the upstairs of 17 Blandford Street, the relocation to a ground floor unit has also helped the store attract new customers and make it more accessible, particularly to elderly and visually impaired customers.

The move to the new store was supported by the business investment team at Sunderland City Council who provided signposting to the Business & IP Centre North East's Citylife Business Support Grant programme and the North East BIC's Digitising the High Street initiative. Both programmes form part of Sunderland's Business Support Programme for the current year and are funded by the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority through its Integrated Settlement.

🌆 Help Shape Sunderland’s Future

We are starting work on a brand-new Local Plan that will help guide how our city grows over the next 15–20 years.

From new homes and jobs to better infrastructure and exciting places to spend time, this plan will make it easier for everyone to understand what’s happening in their area and how Sunderland will continue to thrive.

Even better, there’ll be plenty of chances for local people to get involved and have their say, with early engagement expected from September 🙌

The planning reforms involve a move away from producing large, technical planning documents and towards a faster, more digital, delivery-focused plan that sets a clear vision, measurable outcomes and a realistic route to delivering homes, jobs and infrastructure within a 30-month timetable.

📅 The plans will be discussed by Cabinet on 25 June
