World Blood Donor Day – 14 June

Every blood donation can help save or improve up to three lives. Blood is needed every day for patients having surgery, cancer treatment, childbirth complications and for people with long-term conditions such as sickle cell disease.

In the UK, the NHS Blood and Transplant needs over 5,000 blood donations every day to meet hospital demand. Despite this, only a small proportion of eligible people donate regularly – so new donors are always needed.

Donating blood is a simple process that usually takes around an hour, with the donation itself taking about 10 minutes. Most healthy adults aged 17–65 can donate.

You can donate locally at centres such as the Leicester Donor Centre or by attending one of the many mobile donation sessions held across Leicestershire.

To find your nearest session and book an appointment, visit the NHS Give Blood Service website at https://www.blood.co.uk/ or download the NHS Give Blood app.

Giving blood is a simple act that can make a life-saving difference. If you’re able to donate, please consider booking an appointment this World Blood Donor Day.

Register to be a blood donor, give blood and save lives. Find out more about blood donation.

Diabetes Awareness Week – 8th - 14th June 2026

Diabetes is a long-term condition where the level of sugar (glucose) in the blood becomes too high. This happens when the body either doesn’t produce enough insulin or cannot use insulin properly.

There are different types of diabetes, including Type 1, Type 2 and gestational diabetes. While Type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented, many cases of Type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed by maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet, being physically active and stopping smoking.

If you are living with diabetes, good management is very important. This may include regular blood sugar monitoring, healthy eating, physical activity and sometimes medication or insulin. Attending your regular diabetes reviews also helps reduce the risk of complications.

If diabetes is not well managed over time, it can lead to serious health problems including heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, nerve damage, sight loss and foot problems. That’s why awareness, early diagnosis and good ongoing care are so important.

If you would like to learn more or access support:

· Visit Diabetes UK for trusted information about diabetes, prevention and living well with the condition.

· Use the NHS website to check your risk of Type 2 diabetes and find advice on healthy lifestyle changes.

· You can also access information and support through Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust and local NHS diabetes services in Leicestershire.

If you are worried about diabetes or your risk, please contact the practice for advice and support.
