For around three years now, I’ve made a conscious decision to stop watching the news.
It wasn’t a decision I made lightly. I’d heard it recommended time and time again by respected voices in the wellbeing space, all talking about the positive impact it had on their mental health. Eventually, I decided to give it a try...
That doesn’t mean I’m completely disconnected from what’s happening in the world. News still finds its way to me through social media, conversations, and the radio. I know what’s going on, just not through a constant stream of headlines.
I also know some people may think that’s naïve or that I should be consuming more news and raising awareness of everything happening around the world. I completely respect that perspective, but I’ve realised something important about myself.
I’m an empath.
When I watched the news every day, I often carried the weight of the world’s problems with me. I felt anxious, overwhelmed, and constantly in a state of fight or flight. It affected my mood, my energy, and ultimately the version of me that showed up for the people who needed me most.
I’ve come to accept that I can’t solve every problem in the world.
What I can do is look after my family, be present for my two children, and show up each day for the wonderful people who come to my yoga and Pilates classes and events.
Because that’s the difference I can make.
Since stepping away from the daily news cycle, I’ve noticed a huge shift in my mental wellbeing. I feel calmer, less anxious, and more able to focus my energy on the things I can genuinely influence.
This isn’t me saying everyone should stop watching the news. We all have different ways of processing the world around us.
But if you’ve been feeling overwhelmed lately, perhaps consider whether constantly consuming the news is helping you—or harming you.
Sometimes protecting your peace isn’t about ignoring the world.
It’s about creating enough space within yourself so you can show up as your best self for the people who matter most. 💛
