We all have ways of protecting ourselves.

Sometimes they’re so familiar that we don’t even notice we’re doing them.

The fixer - I try to fix things quickly to feel safe
The pleaser - I try to avoid conflict by keeping others happy
The distancer - I emotionally pull away to avoid getting hurt
The chaser - I seek reassurance and attention constantly
The defender - I become defensive or argumentative

These are protective parts of us that developed for a reason.

And sometimes, the very things we do to protect ourselves can unintentionally create distance in our relationships.

Especially when two people’s protective patterns meet.

One person chases.
The other withdraws.
One pushes for reassurance.
The other feels overwhelmed and pulls further away.

And suddenly, you’re caught in a cycle neither of you consciously chose.

Which protective pattern feels most familiar to you?

Understanding these patterns can be the beginning of changing them.

In psychotherapy, we can explore what sits underneath the patterns you find yourself repeating, including the unconscious beliefs, fears and experiences that may be shaping how you relate to yourself and others.

Sometimes, understanding why you respond the way you do is where change begins.

Take a breath and repeat ...

Today I am going to give myself the grace I deserve.

I am deserving of the love I freely give to others.

I am quietly healing in ways I have yet to fully understand or see.

I am gradually learning to slow down and find my footing.

I release the heavy pressure I carry in my life.

I am proud of who I am, and of the person I am becoming.

We have a new blog out 💜

For many people, saying "no" is more than just denying a request. It can bring feelings of guilt, anxiety, or even fear that we'll disappoint someone or damage the relationship. Our difficulty setting boundaries often has roots in earlier life experiences. If, growing up, we learned that

Have you ever spent time with someone and left feeling drained or energised?

Some people leave you feeling seen, understood, and recharged. Others may leave you feeling emotionally exhausted, anxious, or like you have to hide parts of yourself.

Paying attention to how you feel after spending time with someone isn't selfish, it's valuable information for self-care.

Setting boundaries doesn't mean you don't care. It means you're caring for yourself, too.

You can love someone and still need more space.

And you don't have to wait until someone is "toxic" to decide a relationship needs different boundaries.

Protecting your peace is an act of self-respect. Give more of your time to the relationships that help you feel safe, supported, and authentically yourself.

💜 You matter.

Words hold a great deal of power and are often the first trigger for how we think and feel. The words we choose to speak about ourselves shape the outcomes we experience in life. Even if the words pose no physical threat to you, if speaking negatively about yourself can cause such physical, often painful reactions, imagine what speaking positively can do 🤲

Timing is an important part in whether couple counselling will work. Unfortunately, most couples wait far too long to get support for repairing their relationship. According to Gottman, couples wait an average of six years of being unhappy before getting help.

Waiting can mean years of resentment and unhappiness have built up. Couple therapy allows important work to be done, such as learning how to resolve differences and better communicate in effective ways.

At Relational Counselling we offer both couple and individual therapy. Couple therapy can help you find ways of improving your relationship. While individual therapy can help you understand and work on the part you play, which can positively impact the relationship.
