Shame often shows up quietly, shaping how we see ourselves, how we relate to others, and what we believe we’re allowed to need.

What many people don’t realise is that shame can be triggered by very human, very common experiences. Things like being criticised, not meeting expectations, being laughed at, feeling rejected, or having our boundaries crossed can all stir that deep, sinking feeling.

None of these reactions mean you’re “too sensitive” or “overreacting", they mean you’re human.

Shame thrives in silence and isolation, but it softens when we name it, understand it, and meet it with compassion. When we begin to recognise the moments that trigger shame, we also begin to reclaim our sense of worth, dignity, and connection.

Using a feelings wheel with clients in sessions is useful for them to identify their emotions.

I came across this one which also suggests likely emotions to circumstances 🌿

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a reminder to take a moment for ourselves when we're stressed. Our natural threat response can often lead to fight (self-criticism), flight (isolation), and freeze (rumination). But self-compassion offers a powerful antidote.

By practicing kindness, mindfulness, and connecting with our shared humanity, we downregulate the threat system and activate the care system (the tend and befriend response), reducing stress and fostering resilience.

Research shows that this shift into self-compassion can lower cortisol levels and increase heart rate variability, making us less defensive, calmer, and more balanced.

This month, let’s prioritize mental well-being and show ourselves the kindness we need. Take a pause, place your hand on your heart, and remind yourself that you are worthy of care and compassion.
