Our simple guide to dying, 'What to Expect in the Last Days of Life', is now available in three additional languages: Polish, Portuguese and Romanian. These were selected as the most commonly spoken languages in Somerset, after English, according to the latest census data.

We hope these translations will help make this important information more accessible and supportive for our Somerset communities.

If you need translations in any other language, or would like any of our other leaflets translated, please get in touch:

We're really pleased to support a brand new website https://bereaveguide.com/
It is estimated by bereavement charities that the next of kin of the deceased person can have over 60 different organisations to contact after their loved ones death, as well as needing to organise a funeral and speak to and support the rest of their family and friends.
Bereaveguide aims to make simple work of this by allowing tasks to be coordinated, simplified and done chronologically.
In the next few weeks our Trust bereavement packs will contain leaflets on this fab free service; we hope it benefits our community 🌿💚

The Royal College of Physicians had Dr. Kathryn Mannix as a guest editor in their recent edition of the Future Health Care Journal.

"Dr. Kathryn Mannix discusses 'There is a culture of avoidance of discussion of dying in hospital-based NHS healthcare.’

In Dr Kathryn Mannix’s paper for Future Healthcare Journal (FHJ), she calls for a fundamental change in how the UK health system recognises, talks about and plans for dying, warning that failure to do so is causing avoidable harm to patients, families and staff.
A key theme of the paper is that communicating about dying must become a core clinical skill and should be prioritised during medical training. We should be planning for death and having open, honest conversations much earlier so that patients can access timely palliative care.
What are your thoughts? Read the full issue guest edited by palliative care physician, author and campaigner, Dr Kathryn Mannix: https://ow.ly/2PFM50Z9NVX "

FHJ is a peer-reviewed RCP journal. It has editorial independence and the views expressed by journal article authors are not necessarily the views of the RCP.

The Sunset Country Palliative Care Team would like to Thank Dr. Mannix for her continued efforts in talking about ordinary dying, and what can help improve end-of-life care for everyone.

As a team, we think its super important to do. What to know more? Start here https://somerset.eolcare.uk/content/planning-ahead-booklet
