Good hearing care starts with listening.

Before we talk about hearing aids, technology or treatment, we need to understand what you are actually finding difficult.

Is it conversation with your partner? Family meals? Restaurants? Meetings? Television? Hearing in the car?

We assess your hearing in detail, but we also take the time to really listen.

Because a hearing test tells us what your ears are doing. Listening to you tells us what matters.

Understanding your difficulties and your goals is key to finding the right solution for you.

What is microsuction earwax removal?

Microsuction is a method of removing earwax using a small suction device while the clinician views the ear canal under magnification.

At Somerset Hearing, we use an ENT-grade microscope, which gives a clear, detailed view of the ear canal and eardrum throughout the procedure.

One of the main advantages of microsuction is that it does not use water, making it suitable for many people who may not be appropriate for irrigation.

Earwax removal is not always a one-method-fits-all procedure. Depending on the ear, the amount and type of wax, and your medical history, microsuction, irrigation, manual removal or a combination of techniques may be most appropriate.

At Somerset Hearing, earwax removal is carried out by an audiologist using the method most suitable for the individual ear.

Sometimes the best thing about having control is knowing you probably won’t need to use it.

You’ve probably seen plenty of headlines about AI recently, and it’s certainly become a big part of the marketing around hearing technology.

But the reality is that hearing technology has been automatically analysing your listening environment and making decisions for quite a while now.

It can recognise the difference between sitting at home in a quiet room and walking into a busy restaurant or pub. It can detect speech, background noise and changes in your environment, then adjust how it responds.

For most people, most of the time, that’s exactly what you want. Put them in and get on with your day.

But I’ve always thought there’s real value in understanding what your hearing technology is doing and having a bit of control when you want it.

That’s where connecting it to your mobile phone can be really useful.

Background noise getting a bit much in a restaurant? Make a small adjustment. Listening to music and want a bit more bass? Change the equaliser. Or sometimes you might simply prefer things slightly different to what the technology has decided is ā€˜best’.

And there’s an interesting thing that happens once you know you can make those changes — you often become much happier leaving everything on automatic.

It’s a bit like cruise control. You’re happy letting the car manage the speed because you know the pedals are still there if you need them.

Good hearing technology shouldn’t need your constant attention. It should work away in the background.

But understanding what it’s doing, why it’s doing it and knowing you can take a little more control when you want to is just as important.

Have you had a bad experience with hearing care in the past?

You are not alone.

Many of the people who come to Somerset Hearing tell us they previously felt:
• rushed through appointments
• confused by the results
• overwhelmed by technology
• disappointed with older hearing aids

Leslie recently shared this after his appointment:

ā€œThe great bonus is that the hearing aids I am trialing are much better than my old ones.ā€

At Somerset Hearing, we believe hearing care should feel calm, thorough and personal.

We take time to explain your hearing clearly, involve you in the process, and help you trial technology properly in real-world situations.

Better hearing care starts with being properly listened to.

A little lunch break today with my favourite tiny colleague šŸ‘¶ā¤ļø

Theo joined me between appointments for a sit-down meeting about snacks, nap schedules, and whether we should introduce toy dinosaurs into the clinic.
