Four tips for being an expert birth partner
If you think it's about keeping out the midwife's way & and hand crushing resilience then swipe here
1) Don't wing it
Prepare & Practice - this really is key. Learn what is happening during labour alongside her. That way you can know the best way to boost the birthing hormones. This is not the time for putting your head in the sand.
2) Show don't tell
Energy is contagious! If you are calm so is she.
Don't tell her to 'just relax' (this often has the opposite effect!), show her how grounded you are. You have the knowledge (see tip 1), you've got this for both of you.
3) Pre-empt her needs
She needs to stay in the zone. Don't ask her if she is thirsty, ensure there's a drink within reach. Don't ask her if she's warm, check the temperature of the pool, grab a flannel for her head. You get the idea.
4) You really ARE the expert
Birth might be out of your comfort zone but the midwife or obstetrician are only experts in their field of healthcare. YOU are the expert of your family and what is important to your birthing partner. Advocate for her when she is occupied. Protect your values as a family, and her experience.
