Apologies, but our Medpoint collection machine has had to be turned off again due to the heat. Following some of the “advice” offered during the last heatwave, when we also had to turn the machine off, I would like to take this opportunity to explain why this is necessary. The machine itself is constructed almost entirely from metal, which heats up and retains heat. Below is a photo of the inside of the machine for you all to see. There is a small fan that runs while the machine is switched on, but unfortunately, it is simply not powerful enough to cope with the temperatures we are currently experiencing. We also have an extractor fan running continuously to try to reduce the temperature in the room where the rear of the machine is positioned. Regarding the comments about air conditioning, we simply cannot have an air-conditioning unit in the small room where the machine is located. Unfortunately, it really is that simple. The machine is simply not designed to withstand the temperatures we have been experiencing this summer. We have already had to have the screen monitor replaced once this summer due to heat damage. We appreciate that having the machine switched off is inconvenient, but unfortunately, during periods of extreme heat this is necessary not only to protect the machine from further damage, but also to protect the integrity of the medication stored inside. The temperature inside the machine is currently 28.5°C, which is above the appropriate storage temperature for many medicines. We therefore cannot continue to store medication in the machine at this temperature and risk compromising its quality and stability. Patient safety must remain our priority. Thank you for understanding Louise
