So, this is The Midlife Edit 👋

Not another account telling you how to fix yourself in midlife.

This is where I talk about the reality of perimenopause and midlife. The bits nobody warned us about, the things I’m figuring out myself, the evidence behind what we’re being told, and occasionally the absolute bo****ks we’re being sold online.

There’ll be menopause. Health. Skin. Ageing. Confidence. The things I try. The things that work. The things that absolutely don’t.

I don’t have all the answers and I’m not going to pretend I do.

But I will always try to give you good information, talk about it like a normal human being and never make you feel like you’re failing at midlife.

If you’ve found your way here, welcome.

I think you’re probably in the right place. ❤️

When your hormones shift, the way you care for your muscles and joints has to shift with them. You cannot keep doing what worked in your 20s and expect the same results.
If you are dealing with joint stiffness in midlife, muscle aches, or feeling noticeably weaker, here are three high-impact areas to focus on:

Lifting weights or using bodyweight resistance provides the mechanical load your body needs to stimulate muscle retention and bone density. Stronger muscles act as shock absorbers for your joints.

As oestrogen drops, your body becomes less efficient at synthesising protein (anabolic resistance). Aim for a solid palm-sized portion of protein at every meal to give your body the building blocks to rebuild muscle tissue.

Because a low-oestrogen state makes your nervous system more sensitive to pain, recovery isn’t optional. Prioritising quality sleep, downtime, and stress management lowers baseline systemic inflammation and eases pain processing.
Small, consistent adjustments here make a massive difference in how your body feels day-to-day.

Which of these three areas do you feel you need to focus on most right now?

Notice your strength, energy, or physical recovery changing as you navigate your 40s and 50s?

From age 40 onwards, muscle mass naturally declines at approximately 8% per decade. During perimenopause and menopause, muscle loss speeds up: lean body mass falls by around 0.5% annually while fat mass rises concurrently due to shifting hormonal signals.

These two processes happening simultaneously alter body composition, metabolic rate, joint loading, and overall functional capacity in ways that compound over time.

When your skeletal muscle mass drops, your joints are forced to take on far more of the physical impact and mechanical load during basic everyday movements, like walking upstairs, carrying groceries, or getting out of a low chair.

Protecting and building your muscle in midlife isn’t about aesthetic goals or shrinking yourself. It is about building a structural shield around your joints, maintaining your independence, and keeping your body working comfortably for decades to come.

Have you noticed changes in your muscle strength or joint stability over the last few years?
