LOWER BACK PAIN? I DONโT ALWAYS START WITH THE LOWER BACK. ๐
When someone presents with lower-back pain, it can be useful to look at how other areas are moving too: including the hips and surrounding muscles.
Here Iโm using Muscle Energy Technique (MET) with the TFL, a muscle around the front/side of the hip.
MET involves gently contracting a muscle against resistance, followed by relaxation and movement.
If assessment identifies tightness or restricted movement around the hip, this may be one of several areas considered as part of the wider treatment approach.
But that doesn't mean a โtight TFLโ is automatically the cause of someone's lower-back pain.
That's why I prefer to:
ASSESS โ TREAT โ REASSESS
Understand what I'm finding first, choose a technique for a reason, and then see how the person responds.
That's my treatment ethos: treating with purpose and intent rather than simply working where it hurts.
