A new study from the University of Glasgow has found that domestic abuse, particularly physical abuse involving blows to the head, can lead to traumatic brain injury (TBI) and lasting mental health conditions - even decades after the abuse has ended.

Survivors reported:

šŸ”¹Repetitive head trauma

šŸ”¹Long-term PTSD, depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders

šŸ”¹Mental health issues still present 27 years later

Almost 1 in 3 women globally experience domestic violence. This research confirms that the impact isn’t just emotional - it can have lifelong effects on brain health.

The findings highlight an urgent need for:

šŸ”¹Better screening for brain injury in survivors

šŸ”¹More research into the hidden neurological toll of abuse

šŸ”¹Increased awareness among health professionals and policymakers

As Prof. Willie Stewart puts it: ā€œThese findings highlight domestic abuse as a public health issue with potential for long-lasting impacts on brain health.ā€
