📚 Summer Reading Challenge! ☀️

One of the activities we introduce at home each summer is a simple reading challenge. The children earn points for the time they spend reading, with points adding up towards prizes along the way.

Is reading for pleasure the ultimate goal? Absolutely. We want children to discover books they love and to experience reading as something enjoyable, not something they only do for a reward.

As confidence grows, many children begin to find books and authors they genuinely enjoy—and that's when reading becomes its own reward. This isn't about paying children to read. It's about creating positive experiences, celebrating effort and helping establish a routine that, hopefully, lasts long after the prizes have gone.

Parents often ask, “Am I doing enough?”

Here’s a truth we don’t say loudly enough: children don’t need perfect parents — they need present ones.

Your child’s brain is not built by big, Pinterest-worthy moments. It’s shaped in the small, repeated experiences:
– the way you respond when they get it wrong
– the tone you use when they’re overwhelmed
– the pause before you react

Neuroscience shows us that safety, not pressure, is what helps children learn best. When a child feels safe, their brain is open to curiosity, problem-solving, and growth. When they feel judged or rushed, it shifts into protection mode, and learning takes a back seat.

So if yesterday felt far from ideal, remember this:

Repair matters more than perfection.

A calm “I’m sorry I snapped earlier”
A quiet moment of reconnection
A willingness to try again tomorrow

These are not small things. They are the work.

You are building a brain, a relationship, and a sense of self — one interaction at a time.

People say emotions are like weather all the time. It sounds nice, but most of the time it’s just something to say—like a way to tidy things up.

If you actually stop and feel it, it’s not tidy at all.

It’s not “I feel sad.” It’s more like everything gets quieter and heavier at the same time. Like the air’s changed and you’re moving through something thicker than usual. You don’t even always notice when it started. You just look up and realise the day feels different.

Anxiety isn’t a word in those moments either. It’s that restless, shifting feeling, like something’s off, but you can’t point to it. Like wind you can’t see but you can feel moving through everything. Your body reacts before your mind catches up.

And then sometimes, without much warning, something lifts. Not in a big, dramatic way. Just a bit more space. A bit more light. You can breathe properly again and didn’t realise you weren’t before.

I think the part people miss is the stopping.

Weather doesn’t rush. It doesn’t try to explain itself. It just moves, slowly or suddenly, and then eventually it becomes something else.

If you let yourself do the same, just pause instead of naming or fixing everything, you start to notice it differently. Not as something you need to get rid of, but something you’re inside of for a while.

And if you stay with it, even for a moment, you see it shift on its own.

Not because you forced it to.

Just because that’s what it does.

Parenting gives you these unexpected observation moments that feel almost like case studies in real time...

Yesterday two of my kids had a disagreement, there were strong opinions all round and the words "I'm never playing with you again" came forcefully down the stairs. I held my breath, paused before intervening and waited (a skill I've worked to develop!).

It was quiet for a while and then I hear some quiet chatter, laughter, then the phrase: “Teamwork makes the dream work.” Just like that they are building something together like nothing ever happened.

It struck me how neatly this mirrors what we know about child development (and honestly, adulthood too). Emotions really are like the weather. Stormy one minute, clear skies the next. Not something to fear or fix in the moment, just something to move through.

What was needed wasn’t me stopping the argument or making everything calm straight away. It was trusting that they are developing their own regulation and conflict resolution skills, and that the relationship held.

So much of what we ask of children is emotional endurance – learning that feelings pass, healthy relationships repair, and you don’t have to feel good all the time to still belong. Watching them get there on their own was a good reminder that development isn’t about perfection or constant harmony. It’s about the little steps of learning how to come back together after the storm.

Children’s feelings can feel big and confusing – sometimes even for adults! 💛

Helping them name their emotions is the first step to supporting them. Simple questions like ‘Can you tell me what you’re feeling?’ or ‘What color is your feeling?’ can open up a conversation and teach emotional literacy.

Books like The Colour Monster are a wonderful way to explore emotions visually and make them more tangible. After reading, you can try activities like:

Asking your child to draw or choose colors for how they feel that day.

Using emotion cards or jars to sort and name feelings.

Modelling your own feelings with colors or words to show that all emotions are okay.

By talking about emotions in a playful, open way, children start to recognise and manage their feelings, build empathy, and feel more confident expressing themselves.

“Every child experiences the world differently. 🌎 Some are sensitive to sounds, textures, lights, or movement, while others may seek extra sensory input.

Recognising and understanding these differences can help reduce frustration, prevent overwhelm, and support focus, learning, and overall wellbeing.

Small adjustments, like creating quiet spaces, providing sensory breaks, or offering different textures to explore, can make a big difference in how children engage with their environment and feel confident in themselves.

Learning is a journey, not a race. 🐢 Breaking skills into small, achievable steps can make even tricky tasks manageable. Whether it’s reading a new word or tying shoelaces, celebrating each little win encourages confidence and curiosity.

As we step into a new year, I’m not thinking about resolutions.

In my work with children, young people, and adults, I’m reminded again and again that growth rarely comes from pushing harder or demanding more of ourselves. It comes from noticing.

Noticing what helped you get through last year.
Noticing what drained you.
Noticing the moments you felt most like yourself.

So instead of asking, “What should I change this year?”

I’m inviting a gentler question:

“What do I need more understanding around?”

Understanding your child’s behaviour rather than trying to fix it.
Understanding your own reactions rather than judging them.
Understanding that coping is not the same as failing.

Learning and emotional growth don’t happen on a January timeline. They happen in safe relationships, in small moments, and in compassion — especially the kind we offer ourselves.

If this year brings anything new, I hope it brings more curiosity, more kindness, and more permission to be human.

🌟 Worried about your child’s learning or wellbeing at school? 🌟

It’s completely understandable to feel unsure or concerned when something doesn’t seem right. Whether it’s their progress, friendships, behaviour, or general happiness, there are some simple steps that can really help:

1️⃣ Start with a gentle chat at home

Find a quiet moment and ask open questions like:

“How are things going at school?”

“Is anything feeling tricky at the moment?”
Often children open up more when they don’t feel pressured.

2️⃣ Speak to the class teacher

Teachers see your child every day and can offer really helpful insights.
Share what you’ve noticed and ask if they’re seeing anything similar in school.

3️⃣ Ask for a meeting if you still have concerns

You can request time with the SENCo/learning support team or pastoral staff to talk through what’s going on. They can suggest strategies or support the school can put in place.

4️⃣ Keep notes of anything that stands out

Changes in mood, behaviour, sleep, or learning can be really useful to track.
It helps everyone build a clearer understanding of what your child needs.

5️⃣ Consider extra support if needed

Sometimes it helps to get advice from an educational psychologist, GP, counsellor, or another professional if worries continue.
A little guidance can go a long way.

6️⃣ Keep talking with the school

Regular check-ins help make sure everyone’s working together — and don’t forget to celebrate any small positives along the way.

Most importantly, you’re not on your own.
Reaching out early is a positive step, and there’s plenty of support available for you and your child.
