🌒 LOOK UP… but don’t look directly! 👀☀️
Something pretty special is happening in our skies this evening!
Today, Wednesday 12th August, the UK will experience its most impressive solar eclipse since 1999, with around 90–96% of the Sun covered by the Moon at its peak at around 7pm. 🌙☀️
It should be an amazing sight — but please remember to protect your eyes while enjoying it.
👓 Never look directly at the Sun, even during an eclipse. Ordinary sunglasses — no matter how dark — are not enough protection.
If you have genuine eclipse glasses, make sure they meet the ISO 12312-2 safety standard and aren’t scratched, damaged or torn.
No eclipse glasses? You can still join in!
Try making a simple pinhole projector. Make a tiny hole in a piece of card, stand with your back to the Sun, and allow the sunlight through the hole onto another piece of white card or paper. You’ll see a tiny image of the eclipse appear! 🌒
You can even use a kitchen colander — hold it so the sunlight shines through the holes and watch the little crescent-shaped Suns projected onto the ground. ✨
⚠️ Remember: never look at the Sun through the pinhole or colander — only look at the image being projected.
