ANAPHYLAXIS AWARENESS WEEK #

The emotional impact of living with or caring for someone with serious allergies is a heavy load to carry. Having access to the right information and support can help to calm the fear and worry that can come with living with allergies. That’s why we are sharing Anaphylaxis UK and the work they do to provide trusted information and support to not just tackle the practical challenges of life with allergies, but also the ‘hidden emotional battle’ that can come with it.

Visit www.anaphylaxis.org.uk for more information.

Benedict’s Law / Allergy Safety Guidance: Final guidance now published-

The Department for Education has now published the final statutory guidance: Allergy safety in schools.

The guidance applies to schools in England and outlines what schools must do to support pupils with allergies. This includes putting allergy safety policies in place, arranging allergy safety training for staff, identifying pupils who require Individual Healthcare Plans, and recording and learning from serious incidents and near misses.

Schools will need to consider wider allergy safety arrangements, including allergy safety policies, identifying pupils with allergies, Individual Healthcare Plans, Allergy and Asthma Action Plans, access to prescribed and spare adrenaline devices, reducing exposure to known allergens, school trips, information sharing, food allergy management, wellbeing, and incident or near-miss reporting.

The DfE guidance also makes clear that first aid training alone is not sufficient.

We can help with the Anaphylaxis Awareness element training for your schools / groups if required. As this training will be delivered as an awareness session rather than a regulated course we can offer larger groups sizes making more convenient.

If you would like any training please get in touch.

HSE publishes latest work-related fatal injury statistics:

In the last year, 126 workers were killed in work-related incidents in Great Britain. HSE's annual data release covers the period from April 2025 to March 2026.

This year the regular annual update is complemented by new analysis, comparing the level and trend of fatal injuries to workers in Great Britain with a selection of 35 other countries.

Apart from the years affected by the coronavirus pandemic, the number of worker deaths in 2025 to 2026 is provisionally the lowest number recorded in a single year.

The most common causes of fatal injuries are:

falls from height (31)
being struck by a moving vehicle (24)
being struck by a moving object (21)

Working in hot temperatures:

With high temperatures across much of the country, employers must ensure workers are protected during hot weather.

There's no law for maximum working temperature, or when it's too hot to work, because every workplace is different.

HSE's website has a practical step guide on temperature in the workplace.

This includes guidance on:

what the law says
managing workplace temperature
preventing heat stress
protecting those working outdoors

In offices or similar environments, the temperature in workplaces must be reasonable.

Stronger protections for children with allergies in school:

Section 72 of the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill, also referred to as Benedict’s Law will introduce new requirements to strengthen allergy safety in schools. Life-saving allergy pens MUST now be stocked by schools for the first time under new plans which come into affect in September this year in time for the new school year.

The new statutory requirements mean for the first time schools must:

Stock “spare” adrenaline auto-injectors for use in emergency situations.

Provide allergy awareness training for all staff — covering recognition of symptoms, emergency response and the use of adrenaline devices — alongside improved incident recording and lessons learnt processes.

Have a comprehensive policy for supporting children with medical conditions, including Individual Healthcare Plans to record specific arrangements for individuals like an allergy management plan.

This new guidance replaces the previous non-statutory advice on allergy management in schools.

Firstaider Training can deliver allergy awareness sessions for you where attendees learn about the basic concepts of allergies, how to help prevent allergic reactions, and practical strategies for managing allergies within the school community. The sessions also include hands-on practice using adrenaline auto-injectors training devices.
