Cleo recently started at AVPH for rehabilitation following spinal surgery.

Cleo unfortunately suffered with IVDD a couple of months ago and was unable to walk. She underwent surgical treatment and then started physiotherapy treatment at AVPH.

We have now been able to add hydrotherapy into her treatment plan. And we were so proud with how well she coped on her first session, especially as Cleo isnt a lover of water, but she absolutely smashed her first hydro session! 💪

We look forward to seeing Cleo again soon to continue building her muscle strength back up, improving her proprioception and mobility, and to ensure Cleo has the best recovery possible 💙

With temperatures continuing to fluctuate we wanted to reassure clients that we have fully air conditioned and ventilated rooms, and plenty of fresh water available!

Did you know that animal physiotherapy and hydrotherapy are not regulated professions? 🤔

This means that, in some cases, individuals can offer physiotherapy or hydrotherapy services without holding recognised qualifications. That's why it's so important to choose a provider with the appropriate training, experience, and professional memberships; helping to ensure your pet receives safe, effective care.

For physiotherapy, check that your practitioner is registered with a recognised professional body, such as RAMP, NAVP, AHPR or IRVAP. These organisations uphold high professional and educational standards for their members.

When choosing a hydrotherapy provider, look for practitioners who hold at least Level 3 Hydrotherapy qualifications and are members of organisations such as CHA, NARCH, IRVAP or IAAT.

At AVPH, all of our hydrotherapists and physiotherapists are fully qualified and committed to delivering the highest standard of care. You can have complete confidence that your pet is in safe, experienced hands 💙🐾

Nelson recently started at AVPH due to him slowing down on his walks and losing muscle mass and strength due to suspected osteoarthritis 🐕

He is thoroughly enjoying his hydrotherapy sessions and is eager to do his home physio exercises in between sessions! 🐶

Nelson's owner started to see signs of improvements after his first few weekly hydro sessions 🌟 He is now acting more like his younger self and has better stamina and is visibly building muscle mass in his hind limbs 💪

He also got to leave in his lovely new Stellar Pet Products dry robe after his first hydro session which helps to reduce joint stiffness on the colder days by helping him dry off quicker and keeping him warm 💚

Pug relaxing time 💜

Two of our little stars, Stella and Poppy, always enjoy some well-deserved relaxation during their maintenance physio treatment for pug myelopathy.

Meanwhile, their brother Buddy is never content with simply supervising 😆 Our honorary physio assistant often spends the entire session trying to steal the limelight 🐾💙

IVDD in Dogs 🐾

Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) is one of the most common canine neurological conditions, affecting predominantly ‘short-legged, long-backed’, or chondrodystrophic breeds such as Dachshunds.

Early treatment and rehabilitation can make a huge difference 💙

🐶 Signs to watch for:
• Reluctance to jump or climb
• Crying out in pain
• Arched back
• Weak or wobbly back legs
• Dragging or knuckling their paws
• Difficulty going to the toilet

Regardless of the type or location of the problem disc, physiotherapy and hydrotherapy play a vital role in IVDD management; whether treated conservatively or following decompression surgery.

We often recommend your dog has a dry robe to use after hydrotherapy sessions to keep their joints and muscles warm, and to help them dry off quicker to reduce the chance of stiffness.

Now that we stock drying robes, you'll be able to make sure that its the perfect fit for your dog before buying one!

dry robes come in 9 different sizes (including two dashchund sizes) and 5 different colours, so just let us know if we don't have your dogs size in the colour you want as we can get this ordered in for your next session 😁

🐶 Beautiful Lili 🐶

Lili is a rescue dog who unfortunately underwent spinal surgery last year and wasn't able to have any physiotherapy or hydrotherapy treatment afterwards.

Lili was unable to walk or stand unaided when her owner rescued her in December. But since starting physio and hydrotherapy she is now able to stand and is moving her hindlimbs more!

It will be a long road to recovery, which may not even lead to Lili fully walking again. But her owner is doing everything she can to ensure Lili is living her best life ❤
