Is Art Merely Craft, Absent of Functionality?
This is my penultimate piece of a collection of work I've been creating for my first ever art exhibition. The exhibition opens this Saturday at the viewing room in kings Lynn.
Whilst weaving this, I was contemplating what makes art, art. Is there a defining line between art and craft? Or is it all in the eye of the beholder?

This weekend I'm teaching asymmetric basketry and I didn't have any examples to show the students (because they always sell), so this morning I made this little beauty.
I only had 5ft rods left, so it was a wee bit of an experiment too, to see what a reverse zigzag double french rand would look like in chunky old french willow. Because they were so chunky, I decided to incorporate double uprights for extra strength and durability.

Swallows are quickly becoming another of my best sellers. The first one I ever made took me well over half an hour.
A customer approached me at market on Sunday and asked to buy the swallow she had just watched me make... She told me it took me 15 minutes.... I sell them at £15. £1 a minute... I can live with that working as a craftsman playing with sticks 🙌🙌🙌

Is This Art? This is the first of 10 pieces I'll be creating for an art exhibition I've been invited to display at in August.
I've never considered myself an artist... I make functional baskets, stuff that works... Beauty in the form is always something I aim for too, but whilst working, I'm generally thinking about how the item will be used, not how it will look in a gallery....
Art is a very subjective matter though I suppose, so I've accepted the invitation from and have started creating the body of work. Every piece will be made using purely buff noir willow from to set it apart from my usual creations.

This is where all the magic happens, my home away from home. Over the past 3 years basketry and teaching has become such a massive part of my life.
I built this structure especially for teaching under, it's gone through several stages of development, and it's still not finished.
I'm currently shopping around for some canvas walls with windows so that I can shelter my students from bad weather, without losing the beautiful light and airy nature.
