🚒 FIRE TRIANGLE and FIRE TETRAHEDRON: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
Every firefighter learns that understanding how fire behaves is the first step in controlling it safely. Two of the most important concepts in fire science are the Fire Triangle and the Fire Tetrahedron.
🔺 The Fire Triangle explains the three elements required to start and sustain a fire:
🔥 Heat – Raises the fuel to its ignition temperature.
🪵 Fuel – Any combustible material, such as wood, paper, plastics, or flammable liquids.
💨 Oxygen – Usually supplied by the air, which contains about 21% oxygen.
Remove any one of these three elements, and the fire will go out.
🔷 The Fire Tetrahedron expands on the Fire Triangle by adding a fourth element:
⚛️ Chemical Chain Reaction – A continuous series of chemical reactions that keeps combustion going after the fire has ignited.
This fourth element explains why some extinguishing agents, such as dry chemical fire extinguishers, can stop a fire by interrupting the chain reaction rather than simply cooling it or removing oxygen.
🚒 Firefighters extinguish fires by removing one or more of these elements:
💧 Cooling – Removes heat, usually with water.
🫧 Smothering – Reduces or excludes oxygen using foam, carbon dioxide (CO₂), or a fire blanket.
⛽ Starvation – Removes or shuts off the fuel source.
⚛️ Chain Reaction Interruption – Stops the chemical reactions that sustain combustion, typically using dry chemical agents.
Understanding these concepts helps firefighters choose the safest and most effective extinguishment method for different types of fires. Fire science is more than putting water on flames—it is understanding how fire starts, how it grows, and how to stop it safely.
