Following a fascinating presentation from the Sensory Lives Project on the Foundations Behaviour of Concern network group, we reflected on the significant impact temporary accommodation can have on neurodivergent children and their families.

Some of the statistics shared were deeply concerning. Across the UK, 176,000 children are currently living in temporary accommodation — in London, that equates to around one child in every classroom.

For children with autism, their sensory processing differences mean they interpret information differently. This can sometimes have a negative effect on their nervous system, which can lead to children feeling unsafe and overstimulated in situations; prompting their 'fight, flight, or freeze' state. This can negatively impact taking in new information and learning new skills.

Safespaces provide a low-arousal environment which allows children’s nervous systems to calm and regulate, creating a just right state for learning.

For many neurodivergent children, returning to school after a long break can be extremely exhausting. Being in a controlled environment in a home setting, to then returning back to school where children have to interpret social cues and other forms of communication, masking and camouflaging their behaviours - it can all be very overwhelming.

To help your child decompress after school, structure their routine around calming strategies. This can include dimming the lights, providing quiet spaces, and encouraging activities such as sitting under a weighted blanket or engaging in heavy work like wall pushes or animal walks. These techniques can help ease the transition from the school day to home and support your child in managing their energy.
