The new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, has made adult social care reform a cornerstone of his premiership, launching cross-party discussions and prioritising a comprehensive overhaul of the social care workforce to improve pay, training, and integration with the NHS.

At Safespaces, we would welcome social care reforms that address the long waiting lists for occupational therapy assessments for children with complex behaviours of concern. Timely assessment and intervention are essential to support children and their families effectively.

RCOT have launched their revised ‘Professional Standards for Practice, Conduct and Ethics’. This outlines the essential standards of practice, behaviours and values expected of the OT workforce.

Kate Sheehan, our OT consultant has reflected upon the updated standards, particularly section 12.2.5:

‘You seek to act in the best interests of people to ensure their optimum health, wellbeing and safety. If the choices of an individual with mental capacity are considered unwise, they are still accepted as the individual’s choice’

This principle reinforces the importance of person-centred practice, when working with people who present with behaviours of concern, exploring all available options can help balance autonomy, wellbeing and safety.
