💜 Happy International Women’s Day!

This year’s theme is Give to Gain; the idea that when we invest in women, everyone benefits.
And nowhere is that more overdue than in women’s health.

Pelvic floor problems affect 1 in 3 women. Let that sink in. ONE IN THREE. That’s your mum, your sister, your best friend, your colleague sitting next to you. And yet most of them are suffering in silence. Padding up. Avoiding trampolines. Skipping exercise classes. Planning every outing around where the nearest toilet is. Quietly enduring pain during intimacy and telling nobody.

Not because they don’t want help. But because for generations, women’s health has been underfunded, under-researched, and under-discussed. Because they were told it’s “normal after having kids.” Because nobody told them that help even existed.
That is what _ asks us to change.
Give women information. Give them access to specialist care. Give them permission to talk about their bodies without shame.
And watch what they gain…Their confidence. Their freedom. Their comfort. Themselves. 💛

When women are supported, resourced and truly heard they don’t just survive. They flourish. And when women flourish, everyone around them rises too. 💜

This is a free community event to celebrate International Women’s Day while raising vital funds for and ; two organisations doing genuinely life-changing work for women in our community. Please do look them up 📖

I’ve been keeping a secret... 🤫

I am so incredibly excited to announce that I am finally bringing my clinic to Deal! I have been looking for the perfect venue for years, and I’ve finally found my home at Lole Wellness. 🌿

I recently met the absolute powerhouses behind Lole-sisters Betty and Molly. Their vision for bringing community, wellness, and a sense of belonging to the heart of Deal is so inspiring, and I knew immediately I wanted to be part of it.

From February, you can find me in the clinic every Friday. I’ll be working alongside an amazing team of massage therapists, reflexologists, and nutritional therapists; all within a space that features a beautiful yoga and pilates studio (and a cafe to boot! ☕️).

What I’ll be treating:
✨ Pelvic Health: Individualised care for pelvic floor dysfunction, incontinence, prolapse, pelvic pain and menopause support.
✨ The Mummy MOT: Specialist postnatal recovery for women at any stage after childbirth.

Cancer treatment saves lives, but it also changes them.

As a Women’s Health Physio, I work in the space between the “all clear” and feeling like yourself again. Whether it’s breast, gynae, bowel, or prostate cancer, the physical toll goes far beyond the diagnosis.

I see the patients dealing with:

Post-surgical scarring and restricted movement.

Pelvic floor dysfunction after gynae or prostate surgery.

The fatigue that sleep just doesn’t fix.

The “new” body that feels a little bit like a stranger.

On World Cancer Day, I want to remind you that “coping” isn’t the goal—flourishing is. Rehab is a vital part of the journey, not an optional extra. You don’t have to navigate the physical aftermath alone. 🎗️

The theme is ‘Close The Care Gap’

While there have been many groundbreaking advancements in cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment, many of those who seek cancer care hit barriers at every turn.

Income, education, geographical location, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability and lifestyle are just a few of the factors that can lead to inequity of care.

“Who you are and where you live should not determine if you live”

Raising awareness of the signs and symptoms of cancer, educating people from all cultural and diverse backgrounds, and those living in areas of deprivation, changing cultural attitudes that impact upon people seeking treatment and improving accessibility to screening and cancer services, charities and support groups can all reduce health inequalities.

We help so many people .divine who have a cancer diagnosis, going through treatment and post treatment, often many years later, to find ways to enjoy sexual health, intimacy and pleasure. We work with incredible cancer charities and support groups who do remarkable work in helping so many through their cancer treatment, from diagnosis to post treatment and often for many years too.

We all need to unite together, raise our voices and engage our leaders to improve the outcomes and quality of anyone who is diagnosed with cancer through better education, increased funding for cancer services and research and much more support post treatment. Many people survive cancer, but they’re not living their best life, and we can change that.

What can you do?

❤️ You can hold an event

❤️ You can get informed so you can educate yourself, family, friends, work colleagues

There are few people who have not affected by cancer, be that themselves, their family, friends or work colleagues

New week, new day, new routine!

Pelvic floor exercises are an effective way at treating bladder and bowel incontinence and va**nal prolapse too 💪🏻💪🏽💪🏿

Don’t know how to do them? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Take a breath in to prepare, as you breathe out squeeze your back passage ( as if trying to hold onto wind 💨 ) and lift 🆙 !

Try and hold for up to 10 seconds -might be hard in the beginning, but keep practicing (and remember to fully relax after each contraction!)

Aim for 8-10 reps 3 x daily.

It will take a while before you see/ feel a difference but keep persevering 👩‍🎓

Today, 18th October, is World Menopause Day. The day was established in 2009 by the International Menopause Society as a day for worldwide awareness and a call for women to seek advice when approaching, during and beyond the menopause.

No two women's experience are the same, and being aware and able to recognise that your symptoms might be down to fluctuating hormones is the first step to managing them.

The symptoms associated with menopause are as a result of hormone imbalance and decreasing/ lack of ostrogen.

There are over 30 symptoms associated with menopause (and I would argue there are many more). The British Menopause Society’s list of most commonly experienced symptoms includes:
- Hot Flushes ☀️
- Vaginal Dryness
- Weight Gain 🍎
- Sleeping Problems 💤
- Stress & anxiety 😦
- Loss of S*x Drive
- Night Sweats 😓
- Skin Changes
- Joint Aches 🦴
- Low Energy
- Low Mood 😒
- Period Changes 🩸
- Brain Fog 🤷🏻‍♀️
- Sensitive Bladder 🚽
- Painful S*x
- Headaches 🤕

51% of the UK population will go through the menopause with some women struggling to maintain their work and life balance because of their symptoms.

Walking out to collect a patient and could hear pelvic floor dysfunction being discussed on Radio 2 yesterday. The discussion got many women chatting about who they could turn to for help (little did they know that a worked in the building! ).

No matter how long you have had the issue, have spoken to a health care professional in the past and didn’t receive the care you needed, please know there are many out there that can help.

It’s World Continence Week (2023)

This global campaign seeks to raise awareness of the issues surrounding the often debilitating condition of incontinence and this year is all about collaboration; working together with others to improve awareness and improve quality of life with those who are affected by incontinence.

There is a lot of misinformation out there, so lets have a quick p*ek at what we mean by incontinence and over the week we will delve a little deeper into the world of the pelvic floor physio ( moi!) and highlight some bobby dazzler facts 👐

💧INCONTINENCE (noun) Lack of voluntary control over urination ( p*e) or defecation (poo). Types of incontinence:

💦STRESS URINARY INCONTINENCE ( SUI)~ the involuntary loss of urine in response to an increase in intra abdominal pressure ( so leakage with exertion-cough, sneezed, run &,, jump or shout).

💦URGE INCONTINENCE (UI)-a strong, sudden need to p*e that is difficult to delay and may result in leakage. Often a feeling of you've gotta go' to the toilet, making numerous trips day and or night.

💦MIXED URINARY INCONTINENCE (MUI) ~ bit of both... leakage with exertion and urgency to void (p*e), often resulting in leakage.

💩FAECAL INCONTINENCE ( also known as bowel incontinence/anal incontinence)~ the inability to control bowel movements, resulting in involuntary leakage of stool.

💦POSTPROSTATECTOMY INCONTINENCE~ the leakage of p*e affecting men after prostate surgery ( TURP's, Prostatectomy).

But it only happens to old p*eps right?- WRONG! 🤯 ANYONE can experience incontinence from pregnant women to professional athletes...1 in 3 Women and 1 in 10 Men will experience badder leaks. While posing a considerable financial cost to the NHS 💴 💰 , the impact on an individuals life can be huge.

Pelvic Health Physiotherapy should be the first line treatment for most people if they have symptoms of incontinence. For sure, leakage is common, but it's NOT NORMAL...
